Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Nova is a young adult (approx 2 yrs old) pure breed old Flat-Coated Retriever that is approx 60lbs. Her previous owner passed away and she is looking for a new family. We had previously advertised her and have determined that she needs an active family. She could be a great running partner, agility dog or adventure buddy - she loves hikes, sniffing in the forest, and enjoys snow.
She is very affectionate and sweet, and often shows that by leaning against your legs or approaching for scratches. Kids that are 13+ would be best due to her size. She is currently being fostered in a home with a single person with no other dogs and cats.
Nova is a smart dog who enjoys training and enrichment as she is a working breed. She is incredibly playful, and loves playing with balls, squeaky and crinkly toys, and to tug. She loves fetch (though sometimes you may have to also retrieve the ball)
Her foster person is starting to crate train Nova, and showcasing what kinds of delicious treats and chew toys can be found in the crate. She is mostly a calm dog at home, who enjoys being around her people for pets. She's great at learning boundaries with doorways, the kitchen and what furniture she's allowed or not allowed on - but you have to be consistent with communicating your expectations! Nova is quickly learning that she She has not damaged or destroyed any furniture, clothes, shoes etc with zero guidance, including when she is home alone and unsupervised. She has not shown any resource guarding around her food, toys, bed, people etc.
Nova has excelled at leash training and consistently walks with a loose leash and responds really well to gentle changes in pressure. She quickly learned how to heel, and is working on staying in position for longer periods.
She loads up easily into cars, enjoys the ride by settling in quickly and having a quick snooze while tethered safety via doggy seatbelt.
Nova is reactive with strange dogs that appear suddenly, such as from alleyways, stepping out from homes or when navigating elevators. She has steadily improved on her reactivity to dogs further down the block or on the opposite sidewalk, and especially those that are walking away from us. Nova and her foster have started working with a professional dog trainer to help Nova develop more confidence.
Nova has met a few non-reactive dogs and with a slow introduction, has made friends and happily co-exist in apartment and outdoor spaces.
Nova is truly a lovebug, whose personality will continue to emerge as she relaxes with you!
