Cole is an older gentleman who is no stranger to the shelter. He has unfortunately been passed from home to home for various reasons, and is looking for a stable and loving home to spend the rest of his golden years! Cole first was surrendered to the shelter in December 2023 when his owner experienced a medical emergency. Cole was adopted from the shelter at that time but unfortunately is back at the shelter just over a year later in Jan 2025. The reasons his owner gave are that he's too strong and not house trained. We know Cole will be a great companion and just needs a bit of love and patience to show him the ropes.
Could that be you? He's now available for adoption and foster at ACCT Philly. You can meet him any day from 10am-6pm. Interested fosters should email foster@acctphilly.org. He hopes to see you soon!

Behavior:
1/4/25 volunteer notes: Cole wanted to go outside so out we went! Cole is a bit of a tank so we were light on the rewards. His notes said that after a year of living with his new owner, Cole was surrendered because he isn’t “that housebroken” but I didn’t see anything in his kennel. Poor geezer just wants a home he can wander around and sniff and an owner who will take him on walks to ensure he’s a healthy weight. He did not like other dogs but was friendly and sweet towards all humans!

BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Owner surrender - “not housetrained” and “strong”
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Cole was on the back side of his kennel for cleaning. He gave a single alert bark when he saw me, and then waited patiently with soft eyes and a wagging tail. He was stress panting a little, but wasn’t letting his stress overwhelm him. He was patient and easy to leash, and came right out once secured.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately, just use a harness or hold the leash properly
HANDLING :
Cole hung out near me in the room. He sniffed around at some toys, and when I threw one he chased it and brought it back to me. He even did a little toss to get me to throw it for him again! He allowed all over pets right away, and took treats gently. He showed me knowledge of “sit” but nothing else. Cole allowed all handling, but did get intimidated if I leaned over him. He especially liked butt scratches, and would lean in hard for them. Overall, Cole is a spunky senior with some energy and life left in him! He will need an adopter that has the time and care to teach him where to go potty, like any shelter dog, and that can give him the exercise he needs.
PLAY:
Engaged in play
TOYS:
Releases willingly. Tossed a toy at my feet for me to throw for him
Per Volunteer 1/2/25: Cole is very vocal, definitely stressed in the shelter poor boy! He was barking in kennel at everyone passing by. Outside in the play yard he was romping around and barked when people went by. He met a dog briefly through the fence and was barking and at one point lunged, but his tail was wagging and no hackles up. Not interested in hot dogs or treats. Took pets from me all over and remained loose! He’s a chunky boy and does pull on leash, but with a harness should be very manageable. He’s definitely stressed - exit searching and barking most of the time we were in the play yard. No issues returning back to kennel!
Per Staff (from first stay on 12/23/24): like his shots and would whale eye, he did not react any further and quickly forgave the nurses. This was especially impressive because we didn't use treats!
