Hello, I am Aspero. I came to the shelter after I was found abandoned. I am older and enjoy my alone time. I may ask to be pet here and there but am content by myself.
This cat has tested positive for feline leukemia. This is a virus that affects the immune system of the cat and can cause secondary and serious illnesses. This virus is contagious to other cats by contact with secretions of infected cats (saliva, blood, urine), mating with an infected cat, or if the mother passes it to her baby during birth. Many cats who become infected with the virus can clear it with a working immune system. Some cats have the progressive form and these are the ones who are terminally infected and have an average life expectancy of 3-5 years after diagnosis.
They are contagious and most succumb to FeLV-associated diseases (such as cancer, severe anemia, etc). Unfortunately, this cat did test positive for the progressive type of this disease. This cat should not be housed with other cats who are not also FeLV positive. This is not contagious to humans or non-feline animals.
