Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Love hounds, but also looking for a smaller dog? Well, Makoa has you covered! If we hadn’t DNA tested her, we would never believe the mix of breeds that make this pretty girl so special. Makoa is a small fry at only 24 pounds. Estimated to be a year old, this girl has a zest for life and after a rough life before becoming a Misfit, she needs someone to help her build some confidence and learn that life isn’t all that bad.
Before coming to the rescue, Makoa was taken to the local animal shelter, very sick and malnourished (weighing only 11 pounds!). While we have no way of knowing her life before rescue, all indications point to Makoa not having the best life previously. Not only was she starved, but she initially seemed uncertain and confused with human touch and is still learning how to be the best dog. She still gets nervous and will have small accidents with her foster mom, but she has improved tremendously and is learning to be less nervous with human touch, thereby reducing the small “piddles”.
Makoa LOVES food and treats and is very easy to train because of this. She does tend to be a little food obsessed – as in she’s always looking for a crumb anywhere she can find it. She hasn’t shown any issues with food or resource guarding with her foster siblings and she loves playing and romping with them. She does tend to try to herd them (thank you cattle dog!), so she will need an understanding fur sibling that can match her energy level.
Makoa loves doing puzzles and working her mind, and she is a super smart girl that picks up on new tricks in a very short time. She is a spitfire and will need committed adopters that will work both her mind and body. She would be a fantastic little hiking or running buddy for someone! Makoa does great in a kennel and she is wonderful on a leash. She LOVES riding in the car and is the best co-pilot that just sits and looks out the window. She lives with cats, but tends to show a little too much interest in them. The alpha cat in her foster home is great at setting boundaries, so she would need a similar confident cat in her home or no cats at all.
If you think this great little girl is a good fit for your family, you can send inquiries to our director of adoptions at muttmisfitsadoptions@yahoo.com or apply to meet / adopt her at www.muttmisfits.com/adoption-application
