My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

FOSTERED IN: Chicago, IL 60625
ESTIMATED DOB:10/2019
WEIGHT: 10 lbs
KIDS: No
DOGS: Yes
CATS: Unknown

HISTORY:
Tutu came to us from an animal control facility. She was brought there as a stray.

ABOUT:
Tutu is an affectionate, silly, sometimes sassy, happy little girl. She jumps all around when you get home from work and is so happy to see you. She loves to be right where you are, but isn’t demanding of attention. She is playful, but only in spurts so she’s not the type of dog you need to worry about wearing out.

Tutu has never had an accident in her foster home and always potties each time she is let outside. She is not being crated in her foster home. She waits patiently in one of the dog beds and doesn’t get into any trouble. She is gated in the kitchen with another small breed dog when no one is home. We expect Tutu would loudly ask to speak to the manager if she were crated.

Tutu loves to snuggle and loves to be right next to you on the couch or in bed, but she doesn’t demand constant pets or attention. She loves to burrow under the blankets, so sometimes you have to be careful before you sit/lay down. Tutu seems a little unsure when being picked up, but once you have her up she is more comfortable. She doesn’t seem to love being carried around, but she doesn’t protest. She can’t get onto the couch or bed herself, so picking her up is a necessary thing in her life.

Tutu loves to wear sweaters, so if dog fashion is your thing, Tutu is a great match. Although they are not sure how it happens, her foster has found that Tutu gets “tangled” in her sweaters on occasion so she only wears them when someone is home. Tutu also likes to just…lick…things on occasion. This seemed to start after her allergies were under control, so we wonder if she finds the licking soothing but no longer needs to lick herself due to irritation. She’ll lick the blankets, or the dog bed, or your hand or ankle, or whatever you put in front of her. She’ll usually stop if you distract her with petting.

Tutu is incredibly well behaved at the vet, but she can be hot and cold with visitors. She barks for a long time at some visitors, and not long at all for other visitors. She is very treat motivated, so she may improve this behavior with positive reinforcement. Tutu does equally well with her two foster parents, but she will occasionally sass the male caregiver if she is in bed or on the couch and he approaches. She is often won over if he uses sweet baby talk with her. She has never sassed her female primary care giver. We don’t know if it is gender, or mild guarding of the primary caregiver.

Tutu doesn’t bark at everything but when she does bark, she expects to be listened to, so she will do best in situations where there are not thin walls between you and your neighbor. She likes to bark at visitors, to reply to any neighborhood barks, and to demand you share your dinner with her.

Tutu is being fostered with 3 other dogs, but she does enjoy bossing the large breed dogs around and likes to yell at them when they walk past her or try to get on the couch if she is already up there. But then a few minutes later she will try to paw them, play bow, and bark at them to get them to play with her… and then act confused when no one wants to play with her. She does not sass the small breed dog in the same way. Tutu will do best with patient, tolerant dogs who won’t be annoyed by her swings between being playful and being bossy. Tutu will also likely be very happy to be the only child.

Tutu had a grade 4 luxating patella upon arrival. The veterinarian believes she was like this since birth, and unfortunately some of the damage was permanent. She had surgery to improve her knee, but it will never be perfect. She will need to remain on pain medication for her entire life. Tutu gets around very well, but is unwilling and nervous to walk on some uncarpeted surfaces some of the time. (Her foster home has a path of carpet runners for her convenience). She loves to get zoomies in the yard and might even enjoy walks.

Tutu has allergies and will need to remain on prescription allergy medication.
