My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Knox, an almost two-year-old Great Pyrenees x Lab mix weighing 77lbs- a true gentle giant to say the least. His endearing nature is particularly touching considering his special need - he is deaf. Despite his hearing impairment, Knox is a happy and easy going guy. His sweet and mild nature instantly warms the hearts of those around him. However, he DOES NOT like sharing his food with people or animals, becoming very defensive and possessive. Feeding time for Knox should look like this...fed alone in a room with a closed door and not let out until he's done eating.

When it comes to other dogs, we have never seen him show any outward signs of aggression. However, it seems that other dogs are unpredictable to him, and he would choose to avoid them if he had the option. If pushed by another dog, he seems like he would defend his personal space. However, we haven't allowed him to feel like he has to defend himself. With that in mind, Knox would be best suited as the only dog in a household or with lower-energy canine companions who respect his boundaries. Alternatively, a home experienced in managing multiple dogs could provide him with the guidance and supervision he needs to flourish.

Knox's ideal forever home is one that recognizes and embraces his distinctive qualities. Patience, understanding, and unconditional love are the pillars of the home he seeks, where he can navigate life with the gentle guidance needed to thrive. Be it leisurely strolls in nature or cozy evenings at home, Knox is ready to share his heart and create a lifetime of cherished memories with a family willing to appreciate the sweet spirit he will bring to his forever home.

If you're ready to welcome Knox into your life, come meet him, and embark on a journey filled with love, laughter, and the delightful sound of endless tail wags.

More about this shelter

Dogwood Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter.

Since its infancy, compassionate, like-minded volunteers have been the driving force behind Dogwood Animal Shelter. Through auctions and sales, a handful of dedicated people raised enough money to build its first, albeit small facility and was established as a 501(c) 3 in 1976. It was filled beyond capacity almost immediately.

The shelter is funded entirely from donations and proceeds from their Dogwood Animal Shelter Thrift Store.

After years of saving, planning and busting at the seams with fur-babies, in 2005 it was time to build a new facility with their own in-house clinic! Under the direction of Dr. John Reinhold and coupled with a very dedicated and gifted team of Veterinarians and staff, Dogwood Animal Shelter continues to offer low cost spays and neuters to the public as well as services to their shelter buddies; services to approximately 2,000 dogs and cats yearly!

Dogwood Animal Shelter began their journey of being a successful no-kill shelter in 1997, and since then has saved over 40,000 lives!
