Stitch came into our care when another Rescue Organization was notified about Puppies living on a Farm in Southern Ontario that were going to be put down if no one would take them. All puppies, including Stitch and his sister Lilo, were able to be relocated to find their fur-ever homes.
Stitch is currently living with his foster parents and one foster dog sibling in a detached home in Kitchener. Stitch has been a welcome addition to his foster families’ home where he has shown great adoration for his foster people, and his foster dog sibling. We believe he would be happiest in a home with other dogs but could be adopted into a home as an only dog. And although not tested, we believe he would be more than capable to live in a home with children, or cats, with proper introductions, training and advocating.
Upon arriving into care, Stitch was a very timid puppy that was afraid of strangers. Stitch’s foster family has worked to provide Stitch with adequate exposure to new people to build his human socialization skills. Through this exposure Stitch has begun to grow more confident, and although still shy at first, warms up to new people quicker than before. Anyone that gets to meet this little fella instantly falls in love with his sweet disposition. His foster family anticipates that he will only become more and more confident as he meets new people and will capture the hearts of anyone that gets the opportunity to meet him.
When Stitch was first placed in his foster home, Stitch struggled with going through thresholds that lead outside, whether into the fenced in backyard, or out the front door for walks. He was very unsure of the great outdoors with all the new sights and sounds and would attempt to pull back to his home when taken out for walks, or bolt back to the door when in the backyard. His foster family has worked hard to build his confidence, through bringing him into their backyard regularly to play and explore, being patient when he struggled through thresholds, and taking him our for regular walks to build his confidence outside. In time, Stitch has become very comfortable and happy in his backyard, and can happily go out for walks with his foster family. When brought into new environments, Stitch does still struggle with going through threshold and does whine. It takes a few trips to the same place for him to be comfortable. Stitch would love a family that will continue to bring him to new spaces to work with him on building his confidence. Stitch does struggle with anxiety when initially placed into the car. He will be very vocal, and howl. His family will need to work to create a positive associations with trips in the car if being good at travelling is desired.
Stitch has puppy energy and has been able to enjoy expending it out through walks and playing in his foster home’s yard with his people or his canine companion. He LOVES to play with toys! Stitch does not require a yard in his forever home if his exercise needs are met through other means. Stitch has had short leash sessions due to his age. He is currently learning how to follow leash pressure and becoming accustomed to seeing other dogs and people when outside. He is currently walked on a slip leash, as he does not like the transitional leash, and does like to zig zag for smells. His foster family is working at developing his leash skills, and he would do best in a family that is willing to continue his leash training as he grows.?
Stitch is very smart and has continuously shown how quick he can learn commands. During the time he has been in care, he has already learned sit, down, come, spin and place. Stitch is housetrained and crate trained. For his age, he requires 5-6 potty breaks throughout the day. Stitch initially struggled with housetraining and does currently get 8 potty breaks for his continued success in housetraining. When Stitch is unable to be supervised throughout the day, or it is bedtime, Stitch is crated. Stitch loves to be with his people and his canine companion, and will whine for a little, which may transition into him digging at the bottom of his crate or playing with a toy in his crate. Once settled, he is good and will just hang out in his crate and nap. Stitch will require support and understanding in his new home on his continued housetraining and crate training success. Stitch is still a puppy, and we believe as his crate training and potty training continue, he will have less accidents, and settle quicker in his crate. Especially in a structured environment, with routine. With this in mind, Stitch has potential to live in an apartment or a townhome.
As a puppy, Stich has had continued supervision when out and about in his home to curb any puppy behaviours that arise. Thus far he has not shown any tendencies to be destructive. Stitch does, however, love to play with water and will splash around in his water bowl, making a nice puddle to play in on the ground. He loves to alternate between hanging around his people and seeking out his foster dog sibling to play with. He has had no issues with sharing his toys with any of her foster family members and has not shown any resource guarding over treats or food.
Here is what Stitch's foster parents have to say about him:
"Stitch is such a good boy already and he is getting better by the day! His smile is infectious, and his spotted paws are too cute. He used to be so nervous about everything, but it has been great to see him grow his confidence each day! He loves to play all day long, but also seems content to just hang out. Our resident dog will certainly miss such a good playmate! He is quite the cuddler as we can pick him up and he loves to chill in our arms and laps. If we didn’t already have our dog, we would definitely keep him!"
Vetting: Stitch is in good health, is neutered and has age-appropriate vetting.
