My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In Terryville, CT - Hi there! I’m Prince. I will be three in March 2024 and if I have to say it myself, I’m pretty darned cute. My best features are I like other dogs big and small, including intact males, and I like cats too! I’m not overly fond of the crate but I’m learning. I am housetrained and leash trained - I’m a quick learner!
I also come with a bunch of my own stuff.

Seriously. You know the scenes on Downton Abbey where the servants are carrying all the family’s traveling stuff to the cars? Yeah. I have a bed, my car seat, a harness, leash, toys - it’s like having a “so you adopted a dog” kit! Even when I’m nervous, I will jump right into my car seat. I’ve gone through a lot of change in the last month, so I’m still a little nervous and shy, and I am still working on my manners a bit.
I am learning not to jump, but we herding dogs can do that a lot (because we want to be as close as possible to you EVERY SECOND). And I sometimes get too excited giving you smooches and forget that I shouldn’t nibble (Oops).

I came into rescue because my first owner changed jobs and had to be away a lot. He didn’t want me to be lonely so he asked ASF if they could find a human for me who could spend time with me, take me for walks, and be my very best friend. I’m originally from NY, but am now in CT.

Oh! Did I mention I know sit, down, touch, and the nice lady who chauffeured me says I am “very responsive to direction?” She thinks I know “no” and “leave it” pretty well and I will look to you when I don’t know how to react to a situation. An experienced owner who knows how to provide patient, consistent leadership would be perfect for me!

I am really looking forward to finding my new best friend! I’ll let my chauffeur friend tell you a little bit about what I’m looking for in a human:

Prince is a friendly, affectionate little guy. He’s just under 50lbs. He’s sweet and very friendly once he has a chance to figure out you’re nice. At first, he can be a little hesitant. A few pieces of string cheese will fix that right up - he’s very food motivated.
He does jump some, and gets very excited giving kisses so sometimes he will nibble your lip. He is most happy following direction, so he needs someone who is confident giving it, and someone who knows herding breeds - Aussies in particular. He is likely not ideal for a family with children under 10, as he can display some displaced herding and nip the back of the legs if he is not redirected. Patient, consistent reinforcement of good behavior will pay off with this guy - he’s really a gem and wants to please. Once he understands what you’re looking for, he’s eager to comply.

Please note that Prince is only about 3 weeks out of being put into rescue, and also changed fosters. When he goes to his new family, he will need 2-3 weeks of decompression time - low stimulation and either being tethered, crated, or gated off in his own space while he gets used to his new family and routine. He will need intro to strangers and new things, but if you’re confident and patient with him, he quickly warms up.

He really is a wonderful dog, and would make a great companion / hiking or walking buddy. We haven’t seen him play a lot yet, which may be due to all the changes he’s adjusting to. If you think Prince may be right for you, please apply at : https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application

There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family. All adoption fees are used for future rescue efforts.
