Here's what the humans have to say about me:
With a peach nose and amber/green eyes, Afton is a strikingly good looking pooch. She is a healthy, well socialized pup who was born September 8 and has not had a bad day in her life. Her mommy was a street dog who was taken in by a Good Samaritan in a tiny reservation town. The plan was for mommy (Angela, also listed on Adoptapet) to come to PUP before the puppies were born, but nature had another plan all together. Puppies entered this world the day before we were supposed to pick her up. Because there were only two pups in the litter Afton was exceptionally well fed and the temporary family took particularly good care of all of them for a couple of weeks before we were able to bring them to Saint Paul to find their forever homes.
Mommy (Angela) may be a Feist dog (a type of small terrier) and daddy is unknown but many people think Afton looks like a lab, but there does seem to be some shepherd influence too, so that is what we are going with. If you do DNA testing and come up with something all together different, we would not be surprised. Mommy weighs 28# and is sweet, athletic, friendly and has been the best mommy ever. We suspect daddy was bigger than mom. We suspect Afton will be at least mid-sized as an adult, but that is best guess. Since we have no idea about who daddy is, be prepared to love this pooch if she is larger than anticipated.
Afton and mommy are in the same foster home. Afton walks well on a leash for a puppy and is happily living with mommy other similar sized puppies. She gets to hang out with other adult dogs from the neighborhood so she is getting lots of good socializing. She is doing well on learning about house breaking but she is not quite there yet. If you take her out on a regular basis, it all ends up outside. She is crated at night. During the work day she is crated and gets out at about 4-5 hours.
The early months are when puppy learns the social skills needed to be a skilled dog in dealing with other dogs and a good citizen in the human world. Adopters should be committed to getting puppy into lots of new and different human social situations, hearing vacuums, trucks, and rattling garbage cans, meeting people who are clapping, laughing, with hats, tools, bikes and skate boards. AND puppy needs many opportunities to meet and greet dogs of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Just sharing a home with another dog is not as much doggie socializing as puppy needs. If good canine social skills are not learned and maintained during these early months, it will be very difficult to ever master them. Puppy play dates, trips to the pet store, puppy socialization classes and later, obedience classes are particularly important. If all this doggie time and involvement seems like a good idea, you are up for a puppy! As always, a tired dog is a good dog.
Afton has been vaccinated and wormed. She will need one more routine vaccination plus rabies at the owner’s expense. The $375 adoption fee (check or cash) includes the cost of pup’s required spay/neuter at 6 months of age provided it is done by one of the PUP vets. We do place puppies outside the metro area but a plan for the required spay/neuter must be in place. We do not ship.
If you are at least 21 years old and everyone in your household is on board with adopting a puppy, CALL 651-645-4370 between 7:00 am and 9:30 pm and we will return your call within 24 hours. If you elect to contact us via e-mail it may take several weeks for us to get back to you. Renters must provide proof that you are allowed to have a puppy. If you currently have a companion dog or cat please be prepared to provide a vet reference prior to adoption if requested.
