Bart came into our care from our local Animal Control Center. He stayed in our kennel for almost 2 months before relocating to one of our foster homes! Since December, Bart has been living with his foster parent, a resident dog and 5 cats in a detached home in Delhi.
Bart has been having a blast in his foster home, where he has been learning the ropes of being a companion animal, building his basic obedience skills, and learning how to live in a home. His foster parent has been loving having his outgoing, energetic, happy, affectionate, and curious personality around the house.
Bart is dog, cat, and kid friendly, and could live in a home with any combinations of these 3, or all by himself! With dog friends, he tends to come off a bit strong since all he wants to do is play. He is still learning to listen and respect other dogs when they are done interacting, or do not want to play with him, and would do best with a confident handler that can interrupt these rude behaviours, while continuing to build his dog socialization skills. With his feline friends, he is very curious, and will often sniff them and just hang out. Although, he is currently working on not running after them when they run through the house. He has shown that he just really wants to play a good game of chase with the cats and has not shown any sign of wanting to harm them. Lastly, with kids he loves to request affection from them, and wants to soak up all the love they are willing to give! He can be a bit puppy though and may be a bit pushy, or jump up, so dog savvy-kids would be best.
When meeting new people, Bart is very outgoing and happy. He does greet new people excitedly and may jump up on them, but he often makes up for this by giving out kisses and asking to play. He believes he has so much love to give and just wants to be friends with everyone he meets, whether he meets them inside his home, passing by his house, or out on a walk. When in new environments, Bart is very curious and will often use his nose to investigate. Bart loves being brought along for adventures, even if it is just to the vet, and would make a great adventure buddy. And although he may whine at first if he feels he isn’t close enough to you, he likes car rides, which makes it easy to bring him along for trips!
Don’t let Bart’s size fool you (60lbs and growing!!)… Bart is still very much a puppy and has the puppy energy to prove it! His foster parent help burn off this energy through walks, training, and play. He loves to play with toys with all his human companions! And although his current foster home does have a yard for him to run around in, he would be fine without one as long as he gets to go out on lots of adventures! He really loves to be taken out on walks and walks best on the transitional leash, as he often resorts to pulling and zigzagging on a slip leash or martingale collar. When he sees other dogs out on this walk, he may try to pull towards them, and will whine if he is unable to. He would do best with a confident handler, willing to continue his leash training.
Bart is house trained, and crate trained. Bart currently gets 3-4 potty breaks throughout the day. When Bart’s foster parent goes out, or it is bedtime, Bart is crated. Bart will whine when initially crated but will settle. He may play with toys in his crate, but mostly just snoozes. We believe Bart could live in an apartment or a townhouse without issues.
As a puppy, Bart has had continued supervision when out and about in his home to curb any puppy behaviours that arise. Thus far he has shown tendencies to be a “hoover vacuum”, as his foster parent says. His curiosity can cause him to be a bit mischievous, which results in him eating cat toys, attempting to chew on furniture, or trying to bolt through doorways. Bart can also be a bit mouthy in or out of play and can be a bit pushy. Bart is easily corrected when any of these behaviours occur and can be redirected. Bart is very smart, loves food, and is great at learning, but he will require a home that will continue training him through these puppy behaviours. Bart will also do best in a home that is willing to continue his general obedience training. He currently knows sit, down, place and crate.
Here is what Bart's foster parent has to say about him:
" Bart is an all-round happy boy who loves everyone. He is always excited to see you and play. Not a mean bone in him. He loves to play with other dogs but can be a bit much. He is well behaved when supervised. Loves playing with his toys and will chew a bone for hours! He is very curious about the house cats. He will sniff them and leave them be if they don't run. He will chase, but to play. He loves to play tug a war and receive a bunch of love. He may be a big boy, but he is a lap dog! Bart will become a wonderful boy when he gets older and is out of the puppy phase. Everyone loves him and we all hope he finds a wonderful home. He would do well with a family who have kids that are dog-savvy. He would love a furry sibling but will do well as an only pet."
Best traits: Bart is a total goofball who loves affection and plays well with other dogs.
Needs improvement: At 60lbs, this boy is going to be big and will need someone dedicated to training to ensure he ditches all of his rude puppy behaviours.
Bart is neutered and is in perfect health! He has one more booster shot left to be completed and **He has not yet been heartworm tested**. Otherwise, he is up to date on his vetting.
