Here's what the humans have to say about me:
In Charlottesville, VA - Kodak is a super sweet boy who is beginning to show his joy in life! He was neglected for most of it. He was underweight, missing much of his fur (flea dermatitis), hookworms, worn teeth, and a dejected demeanor when ASF saved him. It hasn’t taken him long to beat the fleas, the dermatitis, the worms, and to pick up some of the weight he needs. He has now grown baby fur on his bald spots and his new fur is shining!
What’s even more wonderful is his willingness to trust and become attached to humans in his space. He spent his first 7 years outdoors exclusively but is quickly learning to enjoy creature comforts. He loves a good snuggle! Kodak enjoys a bath, especially if it is followed by a towel rubdown! He loves a nice dog bed. Kodak is developing good house manners and has learned to be nice to his foster’s aging kitty. The two no longer need to be kept apart. He tolerates my dogs and likes to play through the fence. He is a bit timid when put into a shared space with my dogs, but he doesn’t try to fight or do anything threatening. He will bark when left alone outside but will quiet down if asked. There may be some minor separation anxiety.
He has not tried to escape from the fenced yard and does not seem to mind being crated if people are nearby. He sometimes barks for a while when you leave, and he is crated. He settles easily after a little while. He loves having a toy or two and has adopted a towel as a security blanket. Kodak likes to play fetch with his favorite stuffy. He was great at the vet visit and allowed the vet and staff to handle him all over. He is a quick learner and tries his best to please. The vet does not expect any long-term issues, health wise, from his unfortunate beginnings.
Kodak is submissive in most situations and will usually comply with gently issued requests. If you make sudden movements, or cause him to feel threatened, he will roll over.
Kodak weighs about 57 pounds now, and still has some weight to gain to be at his ideal weight. He is a handsome boy, with a sweet face, and well-proportioned body. He gets more handsome every day as he gains confidence and conditioning!
ASF believes that he is around 7 years old. He is a calmer dog and will do well as an only dog or with other calm dogs. He will thrive in a calm home with a fenced yard. Although he is nice to the children who have come to his foster home, too many children or young children may be too much for him. Kodak will be happiest with a retired couple, where he can thrive on lots of attention and lead a laid-back life. He should be introduced to cats gradually, as his first impulse was to chase and bark at the barn cat from afar. He has gotten over that and accepts that the cats are family and acts accordingly.
Kodak walks well on a leash, as long as he is not allowed to pull in a way that hurts his trachea. He may have been tied his entire life and is sensitive. He is good about being told to, “Walk easy.” Off leash, he is working on “Come!”, as he often wants to check things out before he complies. He will occasionally stand on his hind legs to see what is on furniture and shelves but is learning that is not OK. He learned very quickly that dogs aren’t allowed in the kitchen, and respects that rule gracefully.
