Tommy Boy is a 3-year-old (birthday 05/11/2021) male American Foxhound. He is neutered and up to date on shots.
Tommy Boy is currently boarded at a training facility for training.
His trainers reported that he is a fun loving pup! He loves to socialize and greet the other dogs (and humans) that come and go every day.
Tommy Boy is currently being fostered in a crate free home environment surrounded by people and dogs of all different shapes and sizes, and he gets along well with everyone.
Tommy is a “true-hound,” and domesticating his natural instincts out of him will be a long road that an experienced handler will have to patiently walk with him.
As a hound, Tommy’s instincts are naturally incredibly strong to move away from a handler and work quarry upland and into the woods. Fox hounds are meant to bay down other predacious species and “protect” themselves if they feel threatened or desirous.
Furthermore; his function is much more aligned to independence and self-actualization than it is to being a cuddly companion pup. Tommy is trying his best to be just that.
Tommy will need clear expectations from his furever family. This means keeping your word will be paramount. If you tell him something, you have to follow through every time. If you give Tommy a command, no matter what’s happening, you must make sure to hold him accountable to following through on the command and offer whatever level of support he needs in that moment. Most often, this means patience and understanding.
Breaking trust will set back your relationship with him without question. He needs to know that you are firm but fair, and that you can be silly and playful but have hard rules. You’re his friend but his parent first.
Tommy is currently working through the return command from off-leash.
PLEASE NOTE:
We review veterinary care for applicants. This includes regular well visits, core vaccinations, spay/neuter, heartworm, tickborne tests, regular monthly heartworm prevention, and flea/tick prevention. Please contact your veterinarian’s office to give them permission to speak to us.
Applications are available at www.puppypawsrescue.org
If your application meets our adoption criteria, we will contact you within 1 week. At that time, you will be contacted (usually by email) to schedule a phone interview and a virtual home visit (Facetime, Skype, etc). Due to the volume of applications, applications that do not move forward to an interview may not receive a reply within that time frame.
