My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Oh my, what a handsome gentleman our River is! So calm and loving and hardly ever leaves you side. River is an 8 year old cavalier mix that came to us as a local owner surrender. Sadly, his mama passed away, and shortly after his daddy suffered a medical emergency. His daddy knew that his recovery would be a long one, so he did the only thing he could, which was surrender River to us. It was a heartbreaking goodbye for both of them. River was afraid at first, but now he is adjusting to life in his foster home. Our goal is to always find the right home for each of our fosters. With River, that should not be a problem. He is the type of dog that can go just about anywhere!

River is a little shy initially. It will take him about 3 days to really relax in a new home. Once he knows that he is safe, River will quickly bond to his person. Once he has picked his person, there is no separating them. He will follow you everywhere. If you are on the couch, River is there too. He will squeeze himself into the smallest area to be next to you. Sometimes he will lie on the floor, but don't worry, he is right at your feet. If you get up to go to the kitchen or the bathroom, don't worry; River will be right at your heels. At bedtime, River is a bit of a pillow hog. He prefers to lay on the pillow right next to you, and sometimes even on your pillow. River is the perfect dog. He is housebroken and crate trained, although he is never crated in his foster home. He prefers to sleep in a bed in the kitchen while you are at work. When you get home, River is so excited, that he cannot contain himself. The whining and crying that comes out of his body is truly amazing. He will even smile at you! Of course, accidents may occur initially as River is learning the new routine but after a few days, he will figure it out.

River is excellent on a leash and in fact DEMANDS at least two walks a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. If you can do more, River would be in heaven. He loves to go and walks amazingly well. At 8 years old, River can keep up with an active lifestyle and would enjoy going for long walks or even hiking on a trail. River does great in a car too. We are pretty sure that River went to lots of places with his previous family. He tries to get in the car every time you take him for a walk. Any place that River can go with you he is a happy pup. River will cry when you first leave him, but he does settle down. He is not destructive when you leave, but he definitely misses you, especially at first.

River does great with other dogs and small animals. He can be a bit of a barker, especially when nervous, so an apartment is probably not the right home for him. Because he is a little more fearful, we would recommend a home with old children, 12+, simply so they know to leave him alone at first and not crowd him. River is not mean in any way, it just makes him uncomfortable.

If you think you can give River the perfect home, make sure you apply today. You will not be disappointed by the love he will give you.

River is neutered, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm.  His adoption fee is $400
