Meet Babka, an intelligent and sweet Shiba Inu with a deep-rooted anxiety. We welcomed her into our home from family friends who couldn't meet her needs in a busy urban environment. She's apprehensive about leash walks and city life but thrives in a quiet, fenced yard, where she can indulge in her favorite pastimes like chasing squirrels, playing with a ball, and lounging in the breeze.
Babka is a special dog who requires an experienced and patient owner familiar with Shiba Inus. In the 8 months she's been with us, she's made significant progress, but she still needs more dedicated attention and support to truly flourish.
While Babka is initially wary of new people, she's friendly and playful with other dogs. A canine companion could be a great source of comfort and guidance for her. We're unsure about her compatibility with cats; she has a strong prey drive, so likely would not do well in a home with small animals.
She's been living with a 5-year-old boy and generally handles his activity well, although she can become nippy during playtime when she's overexcited. Babka enjoys her alone time and often seeks refuge under a bed when she needs some privacy. However, once she's comfortable in her environment and with her people, she becomes more social, seeking pets and affection on her terms. She's developed a protective instinct, barking at any sounds near the front door, which is a new behavior for her.
Babka is most active in the evenings and loves playing with various toys, including balls, stuffed animals, and chew toys. She has a particular fondness for squeakers and may try to extract the squeaker mechanism from toys. While she's generally well-behaved, she may occasionally chew on plastic items that don't belong to her.
She's also quite the digger but isn't keen on having her paws cleaned. An understanding environment or a patient owner willing to work on her comfort with paw cleaning would be ideal.
Babka is currently on a medication regimen to manage her anxiety, supervised by a Veterinary Behaviorist. She will likely need ongoing medication to maintain balance in her limbic system but is otherwise in good health. She experiences seasonal environmental allergies in the spring, resulting in itchiness around her groin.
Babka is a unique dog with a lot of potential, but she requires a special home and an owner who is willing to invest the time and effort needed to help her live her best life.
