The Way Back: Tessa's Story
Gulf Coast Tiny Paws Rescue
Tessa's way back began in Oct.2021. Her cruelty case worked its way through the court system and an area shelter was awarded custody of the three-year-old lab mix and her four puppies. It was evident Tessa's rehabilitation could not be done in a shelter environment. GCTPR was contacted and agreed to take Tessa into their rescue. Seasoned dog foster Stacy willingly took Tessa and the puppies into her home to begin to help the little family.
When she first arrived in her foster home, Tessa was so frightened she wouldn't even sit when Stacy was nearby. It took Tessa four months to gather enough courage to venture out of the room in which she and her pups were fostered. But good things began happening along the way. She became a playful friend to the family's resident dogs, even sleeping with them! At times Tessa shows a bit of a silly side, showing a newfound confidence. Tessa loves to chase butterflies and geckos in the backyard.
Tessa is potty trained, learning to walk using a Gentle Leader head harness, and has learned to stop barking on command! She is food motivated which is useful in many training situations. Learning house rules through the use of positive reinforcement has shown Tessa can learn and her confidence grows as she catches on to each new lesson.
Not unexpectantly, it takes time for Tessa to warm up to strangers. Tessa will need an experienced adopter. She needs someone who understands training using only positive reinforcement techniques. Tessa also needs someone who is consistent and kind in their behavior towards Tessa and their handling of her.
Tessa has made great strides finding her way back. Can you commit to helping Tessa into a home of her own with you/your family as her loving, trusted people? #adopttessa
