My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Athena is a sweet, gentle, affectionate, playful cat. She loves to curl up on her foster mom's lap and will purr her heart out in contentment. When not snuggling, she'll play with kittenish abandon, stalking, chasing, and pouncing on her toys in a display guaranteed to bring laughter.

But things aren't always so easy for Athena. Born to a feral mom living in a cat colony, Athena missed out on full socialization to people as a kitten. Because of this, she's shy with strangers, new things can be scary for her, and she has an easily triggered startle response. But she's also a wonderfully resilient cat who has demonstrated that she can trust and bond to people. She's blossomed into a loving feline companion in her foster home, and her foster mom believes that she can also thrive in a quiet, adult-only forever home.

To keep her digestive system healthy, Athena requires a prescription diet, Hill's Biome, which she loves and does very well on. She is six years old, spayed, felv/fiv negative, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations.

Go meet their pets

We list all of our kitties here on Adoptapet as well as on Petfinder. Many of our kitties go to adoption events at a Frederick PetSmart store. Please be aware that kitties typically do not show their true personality at an adoption event. Check our facebook events page for upcoming adoption events: https://www.facebook.com/pg/FFOCASonpets/events/

More about this rescue

Our mission is to support and facilitate the lifesaving work of our local county shelter (Frederick County Animal Control) by providing the resources to:

- treat and rehabilitate animals with medical and behavioral needs who might otherwise have to be humanely euthanized;
- enrich the shelter environment and reduce the amount of time any animal stays in the shelter, minimizing the chance for new behavior or health problems to develop;
- recruit volunteers and foster care providers who are able to work with special needs animals; and
- help families keep the pets they have and avoid surrendering pets to the shelter.

We serve as a safety net for the homeless pets of Frederick County. To help achieve our mission, we have a rescue program (Cats with Character) as well as a shelter intake prevention program (Project Hope). We work closely with the Frederick shelter's barn cat program, Barn Cat Buddies. Through Project Hope, we are sometimes asked to help rehome animals who are still living with their owners.

On our Adoptapet page, you will find our available cats and kittens, kitties who came through Barn Cat Buddies but who would do well in an indoor home, and animals coming through Project Hope who are looking for a new home.
