My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! My name is Ohana, and I am waiting to be matched to a home in Los Angeles! In July 2023, a true miracle happened for me. I was discovered by a DoVE team that happened to be driving by a small obscure dog meat slaughter house in S. Korea. They heard faint dog bark and turned around to investigate and found me and Mahalo, another dog that was held with me. My fate would have been to live in fear and distress, watching dogs being led to slaughter for human consumption. DoVE Project rescued me, brought me back to health and now I am looking for my forever family!

ID/NAME: DV23-002 / Ohana
SEX/WEIGHT/AGE: Female / 17 lbs / 5 yrs
BIRTH DATE: July 1, 2017
BREED: Shiba mix

VACCINATIONS/SPAY/NEUTER: Vaccinations complete. Spayed.

HEALTH:
Suspected thyroid issues have been ruled out. Her fur has grown in beautifully. The vet in SK indicates that her levels are in the normal range so she does not require any additional medical attention. It is believed that the patchy fur was due to a nutritional deficiency.

SIBLINGS/FAMILY: UNK

With PEOPLE: Ohana adores people. Ohana will happily follow her humans around. Like many Shibas, Ohana is very loyal to her humans, independent, and smart. Ohana has begun her leash training and is progressing nicely.

BEHAVIOR: Ohana is a chill, good-natured Shiba. Ohana doesn't particularly like the other dogs, she prefers to stay away from dogs and explore around on her own. If a dog starts to bother her, she will growl/bark to warn the dog away. Despite all this, we have observed her not to engage in fights with other dogs.

Ohana has a habit of guarding her food. As a dog meat trade rescue, we know that food and water must have been scarce. We have noticed she would bark and growl at other dogs when there is a bowl of kibbles near her. We are working on this issue, and because of this trait, we think she will do best in a home with no other dogs at this time.

We have not observed any other particular behavioral issues.

BACKGROUND:
Rescued by DoVE project in July 2023 with collaboration with CARE in S. Korea from a slaughterhouse in Namyangju.

ABOUT SHELTER STRESS
Dogs who have lived in shelters for a long period of time develop behaviors due to an environment that is loud, chaotic, and stressful, even in best shelters in the US. Dogs in shelters have limited socialization exposure to people and urban environments. DoVE dogs also come from a traumatic background such as dog meat farms and slaughterhouses. While many of our dogs acclimate within a few months with consistency, structure, and patience, some of our more sensitive dogs can take longer to rehabilitate. It's important to note that these sensitive dogs are even more attuned to human emotions and behavior, making for a deeper connection human-dog connection. DoVE Project is committed to helping our adopters desensitize and socialize our dog meat trade survivors.

*********************************
DoVE Project works with several rescue orgs in South Korea. Our dogs are looked after by our rescue organizations at their own shelters, foster homes, or boarding facilities until they are matched with an adopter. When the dogs arrive in the US, unless they are adopted, our dogs stay in foster homes or in boarding, as we do not have a physical facility. These dogs are identified with "in LA" in their names.

Please note that we adopt our pups in the Southern California area. Please check our website for more information regarding our adoption process, our mission, and adoption application: https://www.dove-project.org/adoption-process

If you are interested in adopting, please complete an online application at: https://www.dove-project.org/adoption-application-form.
