Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Introducing our man Gravy! This striking three year-old chocolate Labrador Retriever, weighs in at about 75 pounds currently, although we are working on shedding a few. Gravy came to us as an owner surrender due to the former family not understanding what he needed in life. He had become quite phobic of the people and situations around him. He clearly communicated his needs, but they were left unheard even though he was well loved. As you may know, Labrador Retrievers are impressive dogs bred to either hunt or retrieve and are generally used in working type settings. They also have extreme devotion to their caregivers, eagerness and intelligence mostly. This boy happens to be extremely intelligent and was in a setting that did not do well for his mind. If not given the right direction any dog can become unfavorable in any situation. Gravy had become so weary of things in his former setting he started to communicate, which went unheard for far too long. He was not physically or mentally stimulated as he needs to be. He would growl & back away from anyone he felt was a threat. We believe these behaviors were repetitive, possibly punished instead of actually listening to how the dog was feeling & changing the outcome. Moving forward we are searching for a confident, strong leader, who will help him overcome his phobias, with fear-free handling, and positive reinforcement. We believe Gravy would excel in any kind of specialized training, such as obedience, dock diving, agility or just any type of work that would stimulate his mental & keep him physically moving. Gravy loves to go walking on trails, he absolutely loves to play fetch and is often seen parading around with a toy in his mouth. Gravy is a very loyal companion once you earn his trust, he becomes your shadow quickly, and is always by your side. He will require extra effort with a transition into a new home, but is well worth it because he is an exceptional dog!
Requirements to adopt Gravy-
🎾 A fully fenced yard. No ELECTRIC Fences! Gravy has a prey drive and will bypass an electric fence if applicable
🎾 No small animals, no kids! Not that he’s a monster or anything we just don’t need an added obstacle in his journey to a new life
🎾 Gravy is rather indifferent to other dogs, at this time we would like to place him as an only dog. He feels threatened when other dogs stare at him, although in his former home he did have a companion Lab he grew up with
🎾 He will need a handler who can keep him mentally and physically stimulated, he is not a couch potato, even though he knows how to be calm. His mental insecurities have come from not getting what he has needed to thrive
🎾 An authoritative, but patient handler who will continue to desensitize him to his fears. Someone who will practice counter conditioning to have a positive response.
