Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Super-playful, friendly and energetic - but also a lovable lapdog: Radar is all that, and more. He's a lot of dog in a not-very-large package - smart and opinionated, he'll thrive in a home where he receives training and plenty of stimulation.
HISTORY
Radar was probably only 6-7 weeks old when he was abandoned by renters who moved out of their house. When the landlord found him, he was a scrawny, scared scrap of puppy, badly in need of intensive TLC. He moved into his HART foster home in late August, and commenced to eat pretty much nonstop.
When we took him in he was so malnourished we thought he was a Chihuahua mix. After a couple weeks of good feeding, playtime and loving attention, he looked like a Chihuahua / German Shepherd mix ... and now he's clearly mostly German Shepherd, albeit mixed with something smaller, probably with large ears and not a lot of tail.
SOCIALIZATION
The humas in Radar's foster home include children, the youngest six years old. Radar loves all of them - he's friendly, snuggly, and loves playing with the kids. Despite having started life in the care of awful people, he shows no sign of trauma; he's a happy, affectionate, confident puppy with people he knows.
Young as he is, he's very alert to any strangers in his home. He'll be friendly to visitors, but will also bark at them to let them know they can't take liberties with HIS people. His adopter will need to work on continuing to socialize him to people.
There are several dogs in his foster home. He loved having the company of another foster puppy for a while. With the older dogs, he's friendly and playful but not always respectful. However, he responds well when they correct him.
The cats in his foster home tend to avoid the dogs. Radar has shown no desire to chase them, although he's clearly interested in getting a good sniff whenever the opportunity arises.
GENERAL TEMPERAMENT, BEHAVIOR & TRAINING
Radar is very focused on his people and curious about what they're doing, and he loves attention. He loves toys, and is always up for playtime or for a snuggle!
Beyond that, he's a typical PUPPY - playful, sometimes destructive, and enthusiastically up to typical puppy shenanigans - like stealing and running off with your stuff. Please don't apply to adopt Radar unless you're sure you're up for the hard work associated with raising a puppy! He has needle teeth and scratchy claws, and he is both mouthy and bouncy! He still has a LOT to learn - and just as he's learned to act civilized he'll hit adolescence and have to learn it all over again!
Radar is crate trained, and he usually comes when called. He is not yet potty trained - his fosters' attention has been all on getting him fed enough to catch up on his growing, and that's made it hard for him to keep up with his pooping! However, he is clearly a smart, alert dog who wants to please, and will respond well to training.
HEALTH STATUS
Radar has started his series of puppy shots, and has been microchipped and dewormed. He's been checked by a vet and appears to be in excellent health. We believe he will reach around 60-70 lbs when full-grown.
Because he was starved at a young age - and very likely came from a Mama who wasn't well fed - Radar is pretty compulsive about food. This is not a pup who can be demand fed because he literally doesn't know when to stop. His adopter needs to be willing and able to feed him multiple times a day while he continues to gain weight, carefully monitoring his intake to ensure that he's getting enough to do all the growing he needs to catch up on, without letting him explode like an over-inflated puppy-balloon. Given time we are confident that he'll eventually learn to trust in a reliable supply of food, but he will likely always be inclined to overeat, so his people will need to manage his intake to ensure he doesn't get fat.
HART does not believe in pediatric spay/neuter, so Radar has not yet been sterilized. We believe puppies should receive the benefit of sex hormones, which ensure healthy bone and brain development. However, sterilization is mandatory and is a condition of adoption. Adopters undertake to ensure that their pup has been sterilized by 12 months of age. Upon confirmation that they have been sterilized, HART will refund the adopters a sum equivalent to that charged by the local low-cost spay/neuter clinics we use.
