My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Thank you for considering adoption of a Milo Foundation Sanctuary dog.

Pono is an amazing dog! He is a sweet and cuddly, smart and learns quickly. He wants to be a good dog and responds very well to verbal cues. Just a short "no" and he stops his behavior and looks at you, he is treat motivated. He is energetic, but mellow inside the house and really loves to cuddle.
He is house-trained, walks nicely on a leash and off-leash, can sit, lie down, wait for his meal, and comes when called. He can be left alone in his crate for 3-4 hours (MAX). He loves car rides and is always so happy to jump in and go for hikes. On walks he sticks with you and doesn't show prey drive.

He is dog-friendly and loves to play with other dogs when in an outdoor neutral zone.

He is very affectionate and loves people. When outside (even in the yard) he is friendly to people, but inside the house he is very protective. Dog-savvy people will know how to guide him to be a better host. He showed tendency to guard his food with other dogs, feeding separately is best. He CANNOT live with any small animals or other dogs inside a home.

Pono is a very energetic, athletic and playful dog who loves to chase a ball! He is tremendously smart and very quick to learn, excellent on a leash, fantastic with other dogs and friendly when out in neutral places. He should not live with other dogs. He has some significant trust issues, so he is very protective of his house, people and property when it comes to anyone not in his inner circle. The ideal household would be with active, dog focused adults who have large-dog experience. He is sweet and affectionate with a lot of love to give. Pono is kid friendly out and about but can not be a family dog with kids in the home due to his over protective tendencies!

More about this rescue

The Milo Foundation is an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill organization providing an alternative for homeless pets throughout California, through education, adoption services, and providing sanctuary for animals until permanent homes can be found.

Founded in August of 1994, The Milo Foundation Sanctuary is located on two hundred and eighty-three acres in Mendocino County - offering lots of room for the animals to run and play. The Milo Sanctuary animals typically (but not exclusively) are harder to adopt animals and those needing more rural type homes, such as dogs with social or behavioural challenges, feral cats, horses and other farm animals. The Milo Point Richmond Adoption Center is where the majority of our new rescue intake takes place, typically friendly, adoptable cats and dogs, puppies and kittens rescued from shelters where they were facing euthanasia. The Sanctuary is where highly active or reactive dogs can go and have plenty of space, other canine companions (if they are dog friendly) and live in a stress free environment until such time as the right adoption match can be found.

The Milo Sanctuary is what enables Milo to be a No-Kill organization. Milo brings dogs back and forth from the Adoption Center (MPR) to the Sanctuary to give dogs a break from the stresses of the kennel environment and back to MPR later to try again at being adopted. Potential adopters also do come up to the Sanctuary to adopt, by appointment.
