Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Hey hey! I'm Mars! I'm here at the Blue Mountain Humane Society in Walla Walla! I'm a sweet and goofy 87lb boy looking for my fur-ever home! I'm very smart and playful. I even graduated the WSP Dog Training Program where I learned more about basic commands like sit and stay! I can literally be your best friend companion! All I need is some love, more training, and lots of treats! Oh how I love treats! Almost as much as I love hoomans! The people who know me best describe me as just a big loveable puppy! I love to play outside, I love being pet, and I do pretty well with other dogs! I really want to meet your doggy friend, so bring them here to meet me! While I am still learning some manners- aren't we all- I will do my best to be my best! I just get so excited to hang out! If I sound like the pup for you, fill out an application on the Blue Mountain Humane Society website and come on down to say hi! I'm sooo excited to meet you!
Because, I've been here so long in the shelter, a dog trainer in the community has offered to do free dog training upon my adoption. Please contact the BMHS office for more information.

1. Browse the animals online or stop by during our shelter hours.
2. Get to know the animal. Play with them, take them for a quick walk, observe their behavior.
3. Talk to our staff about the animal. Learn about their personality!
4. Once you’ve decided to adopt, fill out an adoption application. Dogs over the age of 6 months can go on a home-trial to make sure they are your perfect match. Puppy, cat, and kitten adoptions can be finalized that day!
5. Receive a lifetime of unconditional love!
Animals are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Part of our mission is to place the animals in their new forever home as soon as possible, so we normally don't "hold" an animal for the Adopter.

More about this shelter
Our mission is to prevent cruelty and promote kindness to companion animals in our community. We are committed to stopping euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets by ending overpopulation and homelessness. To achieve this we provide quality shelter, spay/neuter, foster care, adoption, and re-homing services for companion animals in our community. All cats and dogs are spayed/neutered before adoption. We also provide adoption support, and screen adopters to ensure a safe, happy & healthy home for them.
BMHS is the only animal shelter facility in Walla Walla County. The society also serves as a shelter resource for parts of Umatilla and Columbia Counties.
BMHS admits an average of 2,250 animals annually from a variety of sources. We have contracts to accept seized or stray pets from the City and County of Walla Walla. We also have contracts to shelter seized pets for the cities of College Place, Dayton, Waitsburg and Milton-Freewater. We accept pets surrendered by their owners when we have space available. While we always attempt to reunite strays with their owners, only about 20% are reclaimed each year. The rest of the animals are placed up for adoption or transferred to other no-kill shelters and rescues around the region.
We offer free, temporary housing for pets of people who are receiving assistance at all local shelters, including the YWCA, STEP shelter and the Christian Aid Center.
In addition to sheltering pets, we provide animal control services in Walla Walla County, including cruelty and neglect investigations when necessary.
During 2013, the society set a record of finding forever homes for 1,210 companion animals. New partnerships with rescue organizations around the state allowed for the transfer of over 300 animals, each one resulting in a successful adoption. Animals awaiting adoption are updated in real time on this website. Now it is possible and increasingly more common for potential adopters from Idaho, Western Washington, and Oregon to visit a pet in our shelter that they found online.
