My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

ROUGE is one of the “Fab Four” we saved from being euthanized at the Pound. The only reason that was going to happen to her was because they needed the space to bring in more unwanted or dumped dogs. She’s spayed, microchipped and was just vaccinated including rabies with her annual ones for this year. She is a beautiful girl with lots of energy and she’s looking for an experienced Shepherd owner.

ROUGE has both beauty and brains and is a very smart, loving girl who loves attention. Her favourite place to be is right beside you on the couch so she can get snuggles and belly rubs. She does need lots of exercise to help burn off that young dog energy so she’s definitely looking for an active family who can give her the exercise she desires, take her on trail hikes and lots of adventures. She travels well in a vehicle and gets excited when she knows she’s going in it as it usually leads to a nice long walk in the woods for her. She loves to play fetch and when you throw the ball for her, she’ll chase after it and retrieve it back to you and drop it out your feet. A fenced-in yard is required for her as she loves to run around in one and chase out the birds, squirrels, chipmunks and well, let’s just say any creature that dares to land in her yard. She does need a fenced-in yard as she does love to run around and play outside. She hasn’t met a cat but we’re advising no cats in the home as she’s never met one and also due to her high prey drive. She has a dog savvy 6yr old child in her foster home and they get along great and the young boy will play fetch with her and walk her around on her leash. She takes it all in her stride and just follows behind him just like his little shadow. She’ll do great with children in her new home as long as they’re calm, loving and considerate to animals.

ROUGE is crate trained and will sleep soundly in it at night. She’ll also go in it during the day and nap while left alone. She’s housetrained and will let you know when she needs to go outside for a bathroom break. She’s a very social girl and loves to chase and run around with the other 2 dogs in her foster home, they’re a female dog around her size and a small male Chihuahua. They’re both calm and that’s the type of dog that would suit her best in her new home. Saying that though she would do equally as well as an only dog too. She’s regularly taken to the off-leach dog park and does extremely well there with the other dogs. A video had been added to show just how well she does there.

ROUGE recently completed a 3-week board and train programme at Sunnidale Kennels in Angus. She did amazing there and the biggest improvement was her leash walking skills. She’s always been good on her leash mind but would just get reactive when she saw another dog, especially if it was an energetic dog like her. She’ll now walk calmly by those other dogs and is rewarded with a couple of treats each time for being a good girl. Sunnidale is offering some free sessions with a trainer for Rouge and her new owner. This is so they can fully understand the commands she knows and the best way for them to communicate with her. She was also trained on an e-collar and she responds very well go it. We have a full assessment report on her behaviour and training at the kennel to share with her adoptive family. She had really good manners and fits quietly for her dinner and loves it when there’s berries, carrots or other tasty vegetables topping it.

ROUGE is a very special girl who has been in care since she was just a pup of 5 months old. What she endured in those first few months of her life we’ll never know but we do know it wasn’t good. She has now been with us in foster care for over a year and we’re really not sure why no one has come forward to adopt her.

ROUGE sadly does have a couple of bite incidents that happened at her foster home but her foster says she completely blames herself for the incidents and feels they could’ve been avoided. Both these incidents happened early on when she first came into her foster home and that was about 8 months ago and nothing at all has happened since.

If you’re interested in meeting the loveable ROUGE then please put in an application to meet her.

Additional adoption info

Dogs: $750 (as of March 2024)
Cats: $250
The adoption process involves a brief application for the pet you are interested in. We will review your application and if you appear to be a good match for the pet, we will contact you for a phone interview. If that is successful we then do a vet reference check. If all goes well we will then set up a meet and greet for you and anyone else living in the home including any resident dogs with the pet. We then ask you to go home and contemplate your decision on adopting the pet and let us know your decision within 24hrs of meeting the pet. If applicable we will then move forward with the adoption at a mutually agreed upon time.

Go meet their pets

We only set up meet and greets with our animals once an adoption application has been submitted. We do occasionally have meet and greets with our animals at Global Pet Foods in the Barrie area.

You can check out the available pets on our rescuegroups website or on our rescue Facebook page.

More about this rescue

We’re a small rescue with a big mission to save animals in our Northern communities, local Pounds and owner surrenders (under certain circumstances.) We’re located in Barrie, Ontario and we serve the area of Simcoe County and within a two hour radius of the Barrie area.
Our intakes are placed in loving foster homes until they’re assessed, vetted including vaccines, microchip and a spay/neuter (if over 6 months of age) before they leave the rescue to be adopted. Female puppies are spayed at 6 months of age and males 8 months of age.)
We’re always looking for additional foster homes as we can only do intakes if we have foster homes for them to go into.
