My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

"Nico, why are you so amazing? Great question, I would love to tell you! First off, I am a great catch. Literally, I am great at playing catch. Do I always catch the ball? No. But do I look adorable chasing after it like a goof? Why yes, yes I do. I have other amazing qualities as well. I love kids, and playing with them is the highlight of my day. I mean, usually my playing is laying on their things or trying to kiss their face, but I am a very present playmate. I am also a wonderful motivator. Need to work or do your homework? I got your back, or at least I will lay next to you in such a cute way you will never want to move. You may be thinking, "he sounds a bit like a couch potato, and, well...you're not wrong. I do nap like it's a sport, but I also love to play tug-o-war and other fun games. Deep down though, I am not a complicated guy. I like the simple things like long walks on the street and a good cuddle. The way to my heart is definitely snacks and a good belly rub. Physical touch is my love language! Other hobbies include sunbathing and guarding the backyard from invaders. Squirrels may look innocent, but they are plotting to take over the world! Don't worry, they can't get passed me! In addition to being quite the looker, I am also extremely empathetic. If you're sad, we're sad. Other than that, I love life and all the people in it, and I am just waiting to find my perfect match! The only thing I don't like is rain; but, I was found tied outside a home during Hurricane Nico, so it's definitely understandable. The trick to helping me with this, is just leave the doors open! I will find my safe space (sometimes a closet, a certain bed, or even a bathroom). Since I do like so much human touch, I'm not really a pack guy. I will engage with other dogs, but I just assume have a home where I can hang with my humans as my first choice. If I sound like your kind of guy, contact Houston Cares Animal Rescue, or my super fun foster family, and apply to adopt me today.

More about this rescue

Houston Cares Animal Rescue (Formerly known as Westbury CARE) is more than just a 501c3 rescue, it’s a community of animal lovers working together to make a difference for animals in Houston. Started as a small group of neighbors trying to help the animals in their neighborhood; CARE quickly grew into a non-profit rescue because the need in Houston is so great. Despite its growth, CARE has aimed to keep its community feel and is built on the idea that it will take a community of Houstonians to make change. It is estimated that there are over a million strays in Houston. We believe change will only happen through a multi prong approach including rescue, education, spay/neuter, and changes to our legislation. We believe that the more the rescue community works together and supports each other the more the animals benefit and the more change will be seen. We are proud to be a small and growing part of the Houston rescue community.
CARE saves hundreds of animals from the streets of Houston each year. While waiting to find their forever homes, animals live in loving foster homes. This means that the animals are able to adjust to life off the streets and, if needed, learn to trust again. The animals receive full vet care and, if needed, they receive behavior training. The care of each animal usually well exceeds their adoption fee and money is raised through fundraisers and donations. We are asked for help for many new animals every single day but have to turn many of them away due to lack of foster homes. Every time we find a new foster or an animal is adopted we can save more animals off the streets that are waiting for their chance at a new life filled with hope and love. We provide all supplies to fosters, including vet care. Fosters are responsible for supplying a safe loving indoor home to the animal while it looks for its forever home. Fostering gives an animal a chance at a new life.
Beyond our foster group we have other active rescue efforts. We have a trap, neuter, return program helping to spay/neuter and maintain feral cats and cat colonies in SW Houston. We also speak to schools and other groups about rescue and are hoping to grow our outreach program.
Everyone involved with Houston cares Animal Rescue is a volunteer. Although the amount of need can be overwhelming, we give our free time to this cause because we believe that together we can make a difference. We know that every animal saved from the streets has their life completely changed through our efforts and we believe that we have the potential to change the future on a much larger scale through our efforts. We invite everyone to join our community of animal lovers and work alongside us to make change in our Houston community.
