Here's what the humans have to say about me:
She's calm, she's laid back, she's polite - Sadie is a salt-of-the-earth kinda dog: good people, and easy to be around. More than that, she's a momma through and through. She just loves any baby creature - puppy, kitten or small child.
HISTORY
This sweet girl was abandoned in a rural neighborhood near the Tri-Cities, Eastern Washington, in May this year, and has been in a HART foster home since then, just taking life easy. It was clear that she had recently weaned a litter of puppies, and it appears that she had been bred intensively for most of her short life.
SOCIALIZATION
Sadie takes a while to fall in love with a person, and she doesn't push for attention. We suspect she was treated as a puppy-making machine rather than as a living, love-worthy being. We believe that in a home where she's loved and accepted, she will give the whole of her great big heart to her people.
She doesn't much like it when strangers come to her home. Sadie is not remotely aggressive, but she is sometimes barky at first, and may hide. But if your visitors are patient and give her time to decide they're safe, she relaxes pretty quickly. (Treats also go a long way in winning her trust!)
When out in public she's non-reactive, ignoring both people and dogs. She gets on well with polite, calm dogs - but if a dog is rough, rude or pushy she goes into Mom mode and firmly but not aggressively corrects them. And, of course, she loves puppies! She'd do fine as an only dog, and she would also be excellent at helping you raise a young pup.
She is good with cats - calm, polite and friendly. And, of course, she loves kittens.
GENERAL BEHAVIOR & TEMPERAMENT
Sadie's energy level is on the low end of medium. She'd be a good companion for strolls through your local park or around your neighborhood, and she'd probably enjoy casual hikes, but if you're training for a marathon she'd just as soon wait at home. Her idea of a fine day is one spent hanging out, keeping you company and watching the world go by.
That's not to say she's a complete couch potato! Sadie loves water, she enjoys her zoomies and likes playing with other dogs, and she will occasionally fetch a ball or stick for you, but she's not greatly interested in toys - although she does like a good chew.
She's not an especially snuggly dog, but she enjoys attention and loves having her chest scratched. She especially likes to hold hands.
She's a good traveler, relaxing calmly on the back seat while you drive and waiting patiently if you need her to.
Sadie is a quiet girl, who barks only to alert you that there's an intruder on your property.
TRAINING
Her house manners are excellent. She's reliably crate trained and house trained, and fits in well with the rhythms and routines of her home. That said, she's a Labrador - she'll get into the trash if you don't shut it away.
Someone has put work into training this girl, making it all the more strange that they threw her away. Her recall is good and her leash manners are excellent - she stays next to you on a loose leash without pulling, She knows all the basic commands - sit, stay, down, off, leave it - and she's quick to pick up on what you want of her. Sadie is clearly intelligent, will work for treats and praise, and wants to please.
HEALTH STATUS
She is in good health, and has been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and treated for parasites. Based on the vet's estimate we've assigned her a birthday of August 31, 2020. She weighs around 70 lbs.
