My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Camden is a handsome boy who loves to run and play with dog friends in the play yard. When he runs "zoomies" at top speed you can't help but smile. He's happy to be with his favorite people and absolutely loves receiving pets and massages from those he trusts. Camden also has earned the reputation of being a calming influence on some anxious dogs here at the refuge.

Camden is shy around new people and in new situations. He came to Alaqua as a puppy, along with his brother, two sisters, and their mother. Found as strays, it was apparent the four pups had not been socialized around people and were very scared when they first arrived. As time went by, and through the love and attention of dedicated staff and volunteers, the two brothers and two sisters slowly began to trust humans. Soon they were running, playing, and loving attention from human friends.

Camden was the most shy and reserved of the four siblings. Camden will need a little time to feel comfortable and trust you, but once he does, you will gain a loyal and loving companion for life. He will thrive in a calm home environment with an adult person or couple who are patient and committed to helping him adjust to his new home. Camden might enjoy the right dog brother or sister to play with in a secure fenced backyard or cuddle with indoors. Because he is shy he is often overlooked, but for the right adopter who will give him a chance to open up, he will be a true gem

Additional adoption info

It would be our privilege to help you find a puppy, dog, cat, kitten, horse, or other animal that suits your needs. Our knowledgeable hands-on staff is familiar with each of our rescue animals and will be glad to answer any questions you might have. Looking for a cat-friendly dog, a laid back kitten or a horse with a lot of personality? We can help.

To start the process, visit our refuge – and if you haven’t yet seen it, you will be pleasantly surprised. You will be able to interact with the animals in a stress-free environment, unlike a traditional kennel.

Once you have found the perfect, new companion, we will assist you in completing an application. Following a reference check, approval of the form and payment of the adoption fee, you will be able to take home your new pet.
Adoption Fees include:

• Dogs, six months and older: heartworm preventative, flea preventative, preventative worming and vaccinations. $150

More about this shelter

Alaqua Animal Refuge was founded in 2007 by Walton County, Fla.-resident Laurie Hood when she discovered that countless animals were being euthanized due to the lack of a no-kill shelter/adoption organization in the area. Since that time, Alaqua Animal Refuge has helped find homes for more than 10,000 animals. Currently, up to 100 animals are adopted per month from this unique shelter and adoption center, which serves as a true refuge for more than 500 animals at any given time.

As we grow and develop our facility and operations, we will adhere to our guiding purpose: To give neglected, lost and abandoned animals a chance at life.
