My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Please contact Caryn (fortheloveofbirdsnj@gmail.com) for more information about this pet.

Hatch Date: 1996

Brandy is a 27-year-old, statuesque Green Wing Macaw. Brandy has been DNA sexed male.

Brandy has lived in one home since a fledgling, but unfortunately, his mom is ill and can no longer care for him.

Brandy seems to have a preference for women.
He is much more animated when women speak, sing, and dance with him.
He is a skilled dancer and sings opera!!!!! He enjoys watching YouTube videos, movies, and cartoons.

He has a huge personality to go along with his large body. Many nights when his foster mom tells him it is time to go to sleep, he yells, ' What????
He also says Hello and, when given chop or a treat, he first asks - 'Is that good?' after tasting something yummy, he will say, 'Mmm... yummy'.
He will sometimes get in a mood where he mumbles.

Brandy loves interaction with humans, on his terms, and seems to also like calling back with the cockatoos in his foster home.
In his foster home, he prefers to come out of his cage himself and go on a play stand.
We have found that Brandy gets a bit more overstimulated around other large birds.
There are no signs of aggression towards them, but he can be a bit intimidating around them.

This bird would do better in a home where he will be the center of attention.
When out of his cage, Brandy needs supervision for his safety and the safety of destructible items within his reach.
He shared a room with an African Grey, Ripley, for  10 years and was very protective of him.
This behavior might come across to a human as aggressive.

As with all parrots, Brandy will step up on his terms only.
He will lunge when he is not looking to interact.
He will bite if pushed.
Brandy can be sweet and interactive usually once away from his cage.
He can sometimes seem more aggressive when on or in the cage.

He will only be adopted to a home that has experience with similar-sized birds.

His foster mom found out that Brandy has a mind of his own. She needs to allow plenty of time for him to go back into his cage. If you try and get him to step up when he isn't ready, he will lunge at his foster mom's arm, saying, nope, I am not yet ready to go into my cage. Fortunately, he is food-motivated, so that helps.

Brandy is on a healthy diet of pellets, veggies and fruit.

Although Brandy didn't have toys in his previous cage, he learned quickly that toys are lots of fun.
He will destroy a large, multistrand, wood toy in a few days. Daily, his foster mom is putting new toys in his cage.

So if you are interested in adopting Brandy, make sure your budget can accommodate his love for destroying toys.

Brandy will only be adopted to a single-family, free-standing home.
No exceptions.
Brandy is a big boy and can be very loud.
Brandy will not be adopted out to a home with young children, as he could potentially injure them.
His forever home MUST have large bird experience.

Brandy is being fostered in Leonardo, NJ
He will require three in-person visits before adoption
We do not ship our birds.

For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The adoption procedure begins with completing an adoption application and returning it to us. We will check your references and then call you for a telephone interview. While we check your references, we will ask that you review an educational power point presentation. After your application is approved, it is our policy that you visit with the bird(s) three times to have multiple interactions with them and give you time to consider the adoption and get ready for your new family member. There is an adoption fee for each bird.
