Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Update: Sheba is at least 1/2 a pound lighter after her surgery, with these 2 huge stones removed from her bladder! She even looks like she’s got a big smile on her face in her post op photo 😃. (Ok actually she’s probably stoned out of her mind from the anesthesia and pain meds, but it sure looks like a grin 😁 😆)
Definitely the biggest stones we have ever seen removed from a small dog- in an ideal world a “normal” responsible owner would have noticed her urinary issues and painful straining and taken her to a vet long ago before they had a chance to grow so large. We have learned through “the grapevine” of neighbors of the owner who abandoned her that her real name was Negra, and she’s at least 13 years old. She will have to part with her old “friends”, as the stones need to be sent off to the lab for analysis to determine what type of urinary stones and what caused them, so we can try to prevent her from getting more in the future by treating any underlying infections and a special prescription diet. We thought about auctioning off these precious dog-made gems to the highest donor, but wiser heads prevailed 😝
Sheba is resting comfortably (very comfortably 😴 💊) at Country Willow Veterinary Hospital for a couple days while she recovers and to make sure there are no complications and she can urinate normally. Once she heals we know she will feel so much better!
Thank you to those who have donated already and please consider a donation to help cover the rest of her bills- well worth it for a start of a better and more comfortable life.
Meet Sheba! This sweet senior schnauzer mix was left behind when her owner moved out. In a disgusting flea infested basement. With 10-15 cats 😳 that animal control is still working on catching and altering.
Our Animal control friends reached out and brought her right to us, and right away we knew something was very wrong…
Besides being an itchy mess loaded with fleas and secondary skin infections from her longterm infestation, ear infections, overgrown nails, and missing teeth, she was painfully straining to urinate non-stop, and when picking her up we could feel a rock-hard, softball size lump in her abdomen. 😱 Sure enough, X-rays confirmed what looks like 2 huge bladder stones filling her entire bladder! She’s getting surgery tomorrow at Country Willow Veterinary Hospital to finally remove them and we know she will be so relieved not to be carrying those around with her anymore and feeling like she has to urinate every 5 minutes.
This sweet older girl hasn’t shown much of a personality yet due to her discomfort and constant struggling to pee, but she’s definitely a sweetheart, fine with other dogs and of course cats, and is so deserving of the better life that is hopefully coming her way very soon.
Sheba is one of many local seniors we have taken in recently in need of urgent medical care… please consider a donation so that we can continue to be here for the neediest dogs in our communities.
Email njwoof@cs.com if you are interested in opening your home to sweet Sheba once she is ready
Cat rescues: we are sure everyone is drowning in cats and kittens right now, but if anyone can help with even one or 2 of the friendlier cats, please contact us asap! Spay/neuter and initial vetting can be sponsored if your rescue can commit to taking in any of these Northern NJ kitties!
Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.
