Introducing LINCOLN
We are so excited to introduce Lincoln “Linc” to our TMM family!! Lincoln is a 3 y/o male who is just learning how luxurious the life of an indoor dog can be! He is an interesting mix of being a velcro dog when you're up to something, but once he deems it boring - he's off to nap on the couch instead. He hasn't shown much interest in playing with other animals in the household and would rather receive attention from a human. We think Lincoln would thrive as an "only child" - however he has spent multiple weeks coexisting with other dogs and cats in the house. He is very comfortable staying home while his humans are at work and loves to go on walks as soon as you return! And when you're ready to throw on your pajamas, he's ready to snuggle - although he might drop all 67 lbs into your chest as he doesn't quite know his size. While Lincoln is house trained, crate trained and knows some basic commands, he is still learning how to walk on a leash and can get excited about a passing human and/or dog. He is VERY strong and will need an adult to walk him outdoors until he becomes trained/desensitized as he just isn't used to the sights and sounds of suburban life yet.
Linc is very loyal and protective, however he will need someone dedicated to positively exposing him to various environments to help build his confidence. He would likely benefit from a professional training course or someone who has experience in training and socializing. He is food motivated and his treat of choice is cheese (which is helpful if you ever need to hide prescriptions in). Lincoln also rides extremely well in a car and would eventually make a wonderful hiking buddy!
Linc is a typical dal who loves attention, is a little vocal, and is quite the goofball. He will notify you with a few barks upon someone entering the house or some loud scary noises outside. But if you're there to tell him it's ok, he will calm right back down. As some Dals do, he will occasionally communicate with a growl to let you know he's nervous regarding a new person - but he has always warmed up as time goes on - and it's important to note we believe training will easily conquer this nervousness. He just doesn't seem to fully understand his emotions as he will also occasionally half growl when he's really excited - but he's all wiggly and happy with his tail wagging so we know he's just being a little talkative. He will need someone who is patient with him and will allow him time to flourish in his new home. Thankfully, he hasn't shown any signs of allergies, which is unlike most dals, but that may change based on the environment he's in as well as the season.
Lincoln would greatly benefit from a yard or acreage as he loves to run and explore, which is true to the breed. However, he does have an unusual quirk of attempting to eat any flying bug near him - so he will need to be monitored to ensure he doesn't attempt to eat a bee at some point.
Lincoln is up to date on all required annual vaccinations. He has received his first round of the Leptospirosis vaccine and will need his booster in mid September. Due to the shortage of the canine influenza vaccine, he has not been able to receive this optional vaccine however we will reimburse any adopter who can provide proof of receiving it post adoption. Lincoln has also received a dental cleaning, along with a neuter and has been microchipped.
It's important to note that Dalmatians are commonly known for needing to be exercised and mentally stimulated daily! A bored Dalmatian will usually be a destructive and unruly Dalmatian. This breed will also shed twice a year, January through June and July through December (did you catch that?). Dalmatians are big time shedders! We're talking those small hairs that weave in between fabric and never come out. If you prefer a fur free home, this breed is not for you.
Dalmatians are also known for being HUA (High Uric Acid) unless specifically bred with LUA (Low Uric Acid) genes. This means that they cannot process purines and will need specialized diets. There is plenty of information online for low purine food options as this condition is similar in dietary restrictions for a human who has gout disease. Low purine options include turkey, chicken and whitefish based foods. Pork, venison and other gamey meat options - along with ALL secreting organs and all variations of yeast - are off the menu.
"Standard" dog kibbles which contain secreting organs (liver, kidneys, gizzards, meat byproducts, meat meals, etc) should NOT be fed to this breed if they are HUA. Feeding these dog foods would put our pups at risk for HUU (Hyperuricosuria), bladder crystallization, and/or bladder stones which could even lead to death.
We recommend feeding either a low purine raw or balanced fresh food diet, or utilizing dehydrated mixes from The Honest Kitchen (made with human grade low purine ingredients) to ensure they do not have any issues during their lifetime. If you cannot afford to feed these types of dog foods, please do not submit an application. Dalmatians are an expensive breed to properly care for and any future adopter/owner should be prepared for the expenses.
We do not know if Lincoln is HUA or LUA, however unless a Dalmatian was specifically bred with LUA genes - they are going to be HUA. So to err on the side of caution and be preventative, we will treat him as a HUA Dalmatian until proven otherwise.
