Here's what the humans have to say about me:
The animal shelter is a stressful environment for dogs. Locked up in a small kennel for most the day with little human interaction and only a short period outside with little time to release all that pent-up energy. Many dogs at the shelter go wild with excitement when a person enters the room that house their kennels. And when one dog starts barking, that sets off the other dogs in the room too.
Dorito caught my eye because while the other 5 dogs got all excited and started barking and howling when I entered their room, Dorito remained calm, just standing at the front of his kennel, quietly watching me with interest. The shelter's stress hadn't gotten to him yet, and I'm hoping that somebody will take him home before it does.
Dorito is great boy. He is playful, energetic, and loving. He enjoys a good, long game of fetch, and has learned how to "sit." He'll make some lucky person or family a wonderful, loyal, and fun companion.
He is neutered, microchipped and current on vaccinations.
Please call or drop in at the shelter for more information. There are often extensive notes on each dog that are not included in their online bios due to lack of help.

NOTE: If you can't commit to adopting, please consider fostering. No long-term commitment -- even overnight could save a life!

* * SHELTER FACTS * *
"There must be something wrong with the dog if he ended up at the shelter."
Absolutely untrue! Most pets who end up at the shelter are there through no fault of their own. The reality is that some people simply view their pets as disposable property. Others come across unexpected life challenges that make caring for their pet too difficult, and feel they have no other recourse.
"Nothing is known about the dogs in the shelter. I don't want to risk it."
The modern day Martinez shelter isn't like your old school shelters from back in the day. Staff and volunteers spend a lot of time with many of the dogs. Meticulous notes are kept on their behavior and temperament. The information given on the dog's online profile is minimal mostly due to a lack of volunteers having enough time to write an extensive bio for each dog. But if you call or visit the shelter, most likely the counselors can provide you with more info.
"I don't know how a shelter dog is going to do in my home."
That's true for ANY dog, whether they come from the shelter or not. Even dogs coming straight from another home will have an adjustment period while they settle in to their new environment and come to understand what their new people wants from them. A dog in my home may not act the same right away when he goes to your home simply because the environment, schedule and people are different. Whether they come from a shelter or not makes little difference.
"There are so many dogs at the shelter. I'm overwhelmed with trying to pick the right one."
The Martinez shelter has adoption counselors that personally know many of the dogs and who can help you select the dog that will best fit your lifestyle.
"I love dogs (and/or cats) but can't commit long-term."
The Martinez shelter has wonderful fostering opportunities. Even if you can only commit for one night once in a while! And you can choose the dog you want to foster. Foster info: https://www.contracosta.ca.gov/6730/Animal-Foster-Programs
"I want to help but can't bring a pet into my home. Is there anything else I can do?"
Yes! The shelter always needs volunteers and have many options to choose from, including walking and/or training dogs, socializing cats, overseeing doggie playgroups, being an adopting counselor, doing laundry / dishes, and more. Info here: https://www.contracosta.ca.gov/828/Volunteer-Program
There is also a Doggie Day Out program where you can spend a few hours with a dog away from the shelter for some fun. Fill out a Foster application and note that you're interested in Doggie Day Out.
