Here's what the humans have to say about me:
An older farm couple were nice enough to feed a stray dog that wandered or was dumped onto their property. However, they took care of her but did not get her spayed and their own dog was not neutered... so, she ended up pregnant. They called WPR for help. We agreed to take in the puppies as long as they agreed to get mama fixed. We have now taken Mama dog in and got her spayed after the farmers decided they didn't have the funds to do this.
WPR volunteers went and picked up Mama dog and got her to the vet. Mama is about 5 or 6 years old, she has good teeth but has some wearing on her teeth that show some age. I would say she is a medium dog that is thicker like cattle dogs tend to be. Mama is now spayed and has been vetted, unfortunately we also found out that she is heartworm positive. She needs a week to recoup from her spay and then she can start heartworm treatment. Mama also had an abscess on her rear that has been drained and treated so it should now be fine. Mama is shy / scared at first but warms up in just a day or two and bond with the person who seems to be her caretaker. One of the nice ladies at the vet office discovered that she knows some commands, such as 'sit'. She lived with four to five chows and lived outside. So far she prefers dogs to keep their distance from her. This may come from the fact that the farmers said the chows would gang up on her now and then. Mama is very sweet and deserves to have a loving indoor home with a great family that she has yet to experience.
3/15/10 UPDATE: Mama had her heartworm treatment last Monday. She is doing well. She has our den all to herself. She seems to very much enjoy our company when we sit in there and watch TV with her. We have had her about a week and a half to two weeks now and she is really coming around. I about cried the first day that I saw her tail wag and did cry the first time she gave me kisses. She still prefers other dogs to keep their distance but ignores the cats. She is completely housetrained and will walk to the door (we leave the den door open when other dogs are not out) when she is ready to go out. We feed her a can of wet food a day and always have dry food out for her (she MUCH prefers the wet stuff). Mama is a wonderful dog. She is slow moving (which is good during her recovery) but we are not sure if it is because of her age or because she is still being cautious. She is a very funny dog. If you start petting her you better plan on doing it for awhile. If you stop she will nudge you with her nose or put her paw on you to ask for more. She has a tender soul and a loving loyal heart. We know that she can be trusted not to leave the yard once she knows it is home. We love Mama with all our heart and she will stay with us until someone is ready to love her just as much as we do.
Mama will need to be given another heartworm test in 3 months. Once it verifies she is heartworm negative, then she can be started on a heartworm preventative.
3/24/10 UPDATE: Mama is getting more giddy in her giddy up. She is moving around with more ease. I am sure it is because not only is she more at ease now that she has adjusted to us but she probably also feels better. She does not like other dogs to eat from her dish and since it is important to minimize her stress we are not treating her food aggression like we typically would. If you want to sit in your recliner with a good ol' loyal dog by your feet or sit on your porch with a loyal dog by your side then Mama is the dog for you. Mama can tolerate dogs smaller than her as long as they stay out of her food dish. Same with cats. Mama does ok with the kids in the house but she would want kids that don't pester her. She would probably like grand-kids that come to visit. Would be best with no younger children as she does not like to be picked on. As she gets better and is able to exercise I think she would also enjoy leisurely walks with her best friend. She enjoys being outside when weather permits.
3/30/10 UPDATE: Mama continues to move around more and more everyday. She is even getting some bounce in her step. She now jumps where before she would climb slowly. She does need to be introduced to new visitors properly so she does not think they are a threat. Cattle dogs are protective by nature, as a German Shepard would be too. She would make a great companion.
Will someone please adopt Mama and give her a forever home? $35.00 adoption fee. (all her vet bills came to more than $600 but had a SPONSOR pay for most of this, that is why her adoption fee is only $35)
Unchained is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to finding responsible, loving FOREVER homes that are committed to giving these dogs the wonderful life they deserve.
Our dogs are placed in foster homes and are part of our families. We work on basic obedience training, crate-training, and socialization as much as each foster home is able. The dog's behavior is thoroughly evaluated and we have a firm sense of their temperament and personality. Each dog is given lots of love and treats!
