My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This gentle lug of a dog is a shelter favorite! Bowen loves everybody! He was surrendered through no fault of his own. Bowen has officially completed the Good Boy Academy at the shelter and is ready to start his new chapter in his new home! Bowen graduated with honors in cuddling, and couch potatoing. Bowen has also showed great strengths in getting along with other dogs, being gentle, and being fun to be around.

Please call or drop in at the shelter for more information about Bowen. He's been at the shelter for a long time (too long!) and has been brought home by volunteers periodically so they will be able to provide more info about this silly, mellow boy.

Bowen is neutered, microchipped and current on vaccinations. His time is running out.

NOTE: If you can't commit to adopting, please consider fostering Bowen or any other dog at the shelter. No long-term commitment -- even for just a few days could save a life! The shelter counselors are a wealth of knowledge and can advise you on which dogs will best fit your lifestyle. There's a dog for every scenario!

---------- SHELTER FACTS ----------

"There must be something wrong with the dog if he ended up at the shelter."

Absolutely untrue! Most pets who end up at the shelter are there through no fault of their own. The reality is that some people simply view their pets as disposable property. Others come across unexpected life challenges that make caring for their pet too difficult, and feel they have no other recourse.

"Nothing is known about the dogs in the shelter. I don't want to risk it."

The modern day Martinez shelter isn't like your old school shelters from back in the day. Staff and volunteers spend a lot of time with many of the dogs. Meticulous notes are kept on their behavior and temperament. The information given on the dog's online profile is minimal mostly due to a lack of volunteers having enough time to write an extensive bio for each dog. But if you call or visit the shelter, most likely the counselors can provide you with more info.

"I don't know how a shelter dog is going to do in my home."

That's true for ANY dog, whether they come from the shelter or not. Even dogs coming straight from another home will have an adjustment period while they settle in to their new environment and come to understand what their new people wants from them. A dog in my home may not act the same right away when he goes to your home simply because the environment, schedule and people are different. Whether they come from a shelter or not makes little difference.

"There are so many dogs at the shelter. I'm overwhelmed with trying to pick the right one."

The Martinez shelter has adoption counselors that personally know many of the dogs and who can help you select the dog that will best fit your lifestyle.

"I love dogs (and/or cats) but can't commit long-term."

The Martinez shelter has wonderful fostering opportunities. Even if you can only commit for a few days once in a while! And you can choose the dog you want to foster. Foster info: https://www.contracosta.ca.gov/6730/Animal-Foster-Programs
