My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Summer is both DEAF and BLIND. She is being fostered in PA.

Summer is a sweet and gentle, deaf and blind border collie girl who has not had a lot of exposure to the world yet. She has lived in an outside kennel until now. She loves people and is currently indifferent with other dogs, not paying much attention to them. She rides in the car very nicely, staying on the seat with a tether. She is trying to get to know her new environment at her foster home. Updates will be posted as she settles in and continues to relax. At this moment and after several days in her foster home, she is apprehensive when she feels the surface texture change under her feet. She is already stepping out of her playpen area to the wooden floor on her own! She loves being outside and seems to run her energy out by running in a tight circle and even chasing her tail but she is slowly beginning to investigate more of her yard. She is working on potty training and does extremely well sleeping quietly at night. She is also making progress at walking on a leash.
Summer had a wonderful check-up at the vet including good bloodwork and being heartworm negative. Her one eye socket does not have any eye in it so it will be closed when she has her spay surgery at the end of August. Her left eye is very small and she seems to see, at least, light and darkness. She gets excited when she hears her small foster brother’s high-pitched bark or maybe she can feel the vibration when he barks. This is still to be determined.
A home with a fenced yard is recommended for Summer so she can run around for her exercise once she knows the layout of the yard. She is getting her own kiddie pool soon! We’ll see how she likes water since she did not mind her bath at all! Summer’s adoptive family will have to be willing to be patient and work with developing her confidence and independence. She needs a family who will foster those traits and who will encourage her and not feel sorry for her. She has SO much potential that is already starting to come out.
Stay tuned for more updates on Summer.
BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.
