In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!
Zeus is a Shih Tzu who is twelve years old. Even though he is 12 years old, he has many years of love yet to enjoy and to give. He came into rescue when his owners were no longer able to care for him. Unfortunately he had been severely neglected, and he needed to be shaved to remove the extensive matting of his hair. Once his hair grows out, he will be a very handsome boy! Also, his nails were so long they had actually curled into his feet causing him pain. He was a bit grumpy, didn't want to walk, and was limping. After he was groomed and his nails trimmed, he was a new dog who had no trouble walking without limping, and has started to enjoy his daily walks with his foster mom and her twelve-year-old Shih Tzu. He does not like walking on grass, so he usually stays on the patio in the fenced backyard, or on the path or sidewalk on walks. He's a bit awkward walking down the couple steps to the fenced back yard and same coming back up. He probably previously avoided this as much as possible and will have to relearn that it will no longer cause him pain.
Zeus is alert and very curious, exploring every nook and cranny. However, he is not fully housetrained so it will be important for the adopter(s) to help him with this. He currently wears a belly band to prevent him from marking in the house. He is making progress with regularly scheduled potty breaks throughout the day, and he will soon learn to be fully housetrained.
Zeus loves to be with his foster mom and is a bit anxious if he is alone and can’t find her, and sometimes cries until he knows where she is. He enjoys napping, and likes to sleep at night snuggled close to his foster mom, usually up by her head. He likes to sleep in, which is great if you do too!
Zeus is just adorable, and you can't help but smile as you watch him throughout the day and his little antics. He loves to ride in the car, mostly because he can then be with you. Zeus is a very good eater, but should probably lose a couple of pounds, with a regular morning and evening portion-controlled feeding of a quality dog food.
The ideal adopter(s) will be home with him most of the time because he is anxious without company. They will need to help him with his housetraining and to lose a couple of pounds. It is not known how he will be with children, but given that he is a senior dog and he has a low activity level, it is not recommended that he be adopted by a home with children.
These are the requirements for Zeus’ adoptive family:
• Be a low key, quiet home, where the family is home most of the time and Zeus can be with them. He has a bit of separation anxiety and does best if someone is home much of the day.
• A home with no children or few visits from children.
• A family who will be patient and commit to continuing with Zeus’ housetraining and weight loss. He is making good progress and will be successful with the help of his new family.
• Should live within 75 miles of New Brighton, MN and commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September.
Zeus is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. He is scheduled for a full dental on September 13th and will be available for adoption after then. Applications for his adoption are now being accepted, reviewed and processed. If approved, Zeus may go to his adoptive home prior to September 13th, with the understanding that the adopter must take him to his scheduled dental appointment on September 13th. The rescue will pay for the dental.
Zeus’ adoption fee is $170.00 plus $12.79 sales tax for a total of $182.79.
To meet Zeus, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.
