My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I’m Kenneth, a 1 1/2-year-old black cat who was found in SE Rochester. Get this: my name means “handsome.” That fits, doesn’t it? It also means, “born of fire.” Just about any stray cat has been through some tough times. When I first arrived here in July 2023 after being found in SE Rochester, I was a scaredy cat who would climb up high on the cat towers to feel safe. Now, I don’t need to hang out up high so often anymore. I like lounging on the beds on the window ledges with the other cats, and when things are quiet and I’m with a familiar person, I will chase wand or string toys. I have followed a volunteer, wanting to be near a toy so I could play. My fascination made me forget my nervousness. I would still run if she tried to pet me, but playing with a person was a big step after I’ve been skittish for so long! See what happens when you are patient! It can happen! I’ve grown bigger and even more handsome than when I first arrived. Check out my shiny black coat and gorgeous green eyes! I’m not a little kitty kiddo anymore! I’m a handsome hunk who’s hoping that a special person will come along. Are you someone who’s willing to go “through the fire” with me? Give me time? Be patient? Know that it may be weeks or months or ??? for me to trust and truly give myself to you? I hope there’s someone out there who will accept and love me as I am. Kenneth.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Paws and Claws Humane Society (PCHS) is a non-profit, mostly volunteer organization that rescues and shelters homeless cats and dogs until they can be adopted into their “forever” homes. We want our clients to understand that adopting and animal is a lifetime responsibility and commitment to that animal.

All prospective adopters must show (at the time of adoption) a valid drivers license or other acceptable identification to verify their name, address, and age. Adopters must be 18 yrs of age. Children under the age of 12 years old need to be present at time of viewing shelter cats or dogs.

After submitting an application, there is generally a processing period of 1-3 days in order to complete all pre-adoption checks and paperwork before an adopter may take possession of the animal.

More about this rescue

Paws and Claws Humane Society is committed to partnering with the community to shelter, protect, and seek adoptive homes for abandoned or lost companion animals.

We have served Southern Minnesota for over 30 years and we are the largest shelter in the 8 surrounding counties that does not limit the length of stay for the animals in its care.

Paws & Claws is funded completely on donations and fundraising events and receives no federal, state, county or city funds. We currently have nearly 900 dues paying members.

Paws & Claws has a community fund to help pay for the spaying and neutering of companion animals for those who cannot afford it.

We give over 40 tours and presentations annually, educating the public [including over 400 children] about proper animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering companion animals to help control the pet population in Southern Minnesota.

We have over 110 families that participate in the Guardian Angel Program [sponsoring animals] each month.

Paws & Claws will take in an injured animal and get the emergency medical care that it requires.

Local veterinarians in and around Rochester help Paws & Claws by providing over 145 free spay or neuters each year.

In a typical year the shelter will facilitate adoptions and provide care for over 600 dogs and cats.
