Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Sometimes goofy, sometimes serious, always up for a cuddle - Bombur is just a fun pup to have around. He likes to stay close to his special person, but he's also good at entertaining himself, with toys or splashing in his pool or just hanging out and pondering the meaning of life.
HISTORY
The Plopperpaws' rescuer found them on the side of a country road near the Tri-Cities, in Eastern Washington, on a hot day in early June. They were scared, skinny and very thirsty. She cared for them and fed them up while searching for their owner, who denied dumping them but didn't want them back. He told us they were born on March 14, 2023, and he agreed to release them to HART in return for having their mama, a large purebred Doberman, spayed. We believe papa was some sort of large black dog, and our best guess - based on their appearance and temperament - is that he was a Labrador.
Bombur has been thriving and learning in his foster home in Kennewick, Eastern Washington, since mid-June.
SOCIALIZATION
Bombur is a confident, friendly pup who loves his special person. He may get a little barky and protective when strangers come onto his property, but when introduced to new humans he's quick to make friends. He has not been introduced to any young children, but we would expect him to be friendly.
He shares his home with several other dogs, and is respectful and friendly with all of them, as well as gentle with a couple of tiny seniors. He hasn't been exposed to cats and would probably chase, but he's young enough to learn manners and be able to live safely with a confident, dog-savvy cat.
In addition, his foster home has free-range chickens and ducks, and Bombur is been learning to be respectful and not chase, although he still can't be trusted with them unsupervised. He knows how he's supposed to behave and he TRIES to be good!
TEMPERAMENT AND BEHAVIOR
As he matures, Bombur is proving to be a happy-go-lucky, playful dog who loves to explore. An adventurous, curious, fun pup, Bombur is kind, intelligent and loving. He has everything it takes to be a great family dog!
His temperament appears to be more easy-going Labrador than high-drive Doberman. However, he's no couch potato, and needs a good workout every day. Until he is 12-15 months old that should involve training, brain games, free play and controlled walks, because working him too hard while his bones are soft and growing could cause lasting and painful damage. In the long term we'd expect him to keep up with you even on strenuous hikes or running.
This boy loves to be loved! Settle down with him for a cuddle and he melts like an ice cream cone on a hot summer day!
Bombur loves water - he spends many happy hours splashing in the water tub his foster mom has provided, and he loves playing with the sprinklers in his yard. He also enjoys a good chew - a hunk of deer antler will keep him occupied for hours.
TRAINING
Bombur is responding well to basic training. His recall is excellent. He is reliably house trained, and is comfortable in a crate. Walking on a leash is a work in progress - he wants to GO and he tends to pull.
Like any young dog, Bombur will push boundaries. Be prepared to deal with issues like teaching him not to help himself to food off the counter (now that he's tall enough, counter tops are a whole new world for him to explore!)
Because he's going to be a big, powerful dog, it's essential that his adopter be fully committed to serious training! You will be responsible for ensuring he is fully and reliably obedience-trained. Bombur is a highly intelligent pup who loves praise, is food motivated, and wants to please, but he also wants to please himself, so he needs a strong, patient human leader.
PHYSICAL & HEALTH STATUS
Bombur is a big, sturdy pup, and we expect him to weigh around 100 lbs when full grown at 12-15 months of age. According to the people who own his mother he was born on March 14, 2023. He appears to be in good overall health, and has been vaccinated, treated for intestinal parasites, and microchipped.
HART does not support pediatric spay and neuter. We believe, based on current research, that pups develop best when they have an uninterrupted supply of sex hormones for at least the first five months of their lives - and in the case of large breed dogs they should be allowed to mature even longer. Bombur's adopter will be contractually obligated to ensure that he is sterilized between seven months and one year. HART will refund $100 - equivalent to the cost of sterilization by our usual veterinary clinic - when you provide proof that your pup has been sterilized.
ADOPTION INFORMATION
Bombur is in foster care in a private home, and will be available to meet you after your adoption application has been approved. Please email HearthfireART@gmail.com to request an adoption application form.
Please note: While we believe Bombur is definitely worth a road trip if you live far from the Tri-Cities, we are available to arrange transport for him to an approved, committed adopter anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, provided the adopter covers the cost of gas and other necessary out-of-pocket travel expenses (eg ferry).
