Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Dexter is a gentle and timid soul looking for his forever home. This 4-year-old Retriever mix only recently arrived from Mexico but has already shown his foster family that his personality is as beautiful and unique as his gorgeous brindle coat.
Despite being shy, Dexter has made remarkable progress during his short time in his foster home. He prefers to be given his own space at first, but once he starts trusting you, he will warm up and seek affection. He seems to find comfort in a good head scratch in particular! Dexter is standoffish at first, but he is totally friendly, although he does need time and understanding to familiarize himself with new people without feeling overwhelmed by attention.
Dexter enjoys leisurely walks, where he demonstrates excellent leash manners and limited pulling. He is friendly and playful with other dogs, although he tends to be more submissive and doesn't engage in vigorous play like the other dog in his foster home. He makes for an excellent second dog.
Dexter is crate trained, although it may take some treats and patience to get him inside initially. Once settled in the crate, he relaxes and rests comfortably. Dexter has been excellent with house training, having no accidents inside the house. Although he has chewed on his bed, gentle correction has helped curb this behavior and he has redirected his chewing to the appropriate toys.
Dexter is a submissive and gentle soul who enjoys his own company and the occasional companionship of other dogs. He is well-behaved and can handle being alone for extended periods without being destructive. Dexter would thrive in a loving home with someone who understands his timid nature and can provide him with a nurturing environment that will allow him to learn to trust and come out of his shell. His adopter should be willing to continue working on building his confidence. Patience and time are essential to help Dexter blossom into the incredible dog that he has the potential to be.
In exchange for a bit of space and understanding at first, Dexter will give boundless love and loyalty to whoever is lucky enough to adopt him!
