My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Joan is a laid back very wrinkled puppy who is sweet, happy, well socialized and in good health. She lived with young children and other dogs in her previous home and is living with other puppies and the slightly grumpy resident dog.

Joan and her siblings were surrendered to PUP because the owner wanted them to get good homes. The mommy, pictured, appears to be a short haired mid-sized shepherd cross. The Petfinder Artificial Intelligence feature says Joan is part hound. With her big ears and wrinkles we agree. She also has the calm hound personality, more than the more intense shepherd personality. She went to a Petco meet and greet and spent most of the time cuddled up in someone's arms. She LOVES to be held. She is very playful with her puppy companions.

We really don’t have a clue who Joan’s pappa is. Base on her size (about 8 weeks and 10#) now and mommy’s size we believe she will be in the upper end of midsized or lower end of large breed, but that is best guess. Most of the dogs from the area have at least a bit of herding dog in their family tree and DNA testing often shows 20 or more breeds, sometimes including shepherd, lab, Chihuahua or husky. She is fine boned and does not give any sense of bulk but she is sturdy. Her adopter should be prepared to love her if she is larger or smaller than our best guess.

The early months are when puppy learns the social skills needed to be a skilled dog in dealing with other dogs and a good citizen in the human world. Adopters should be committed to getting puppy into lots of new and different human social situations, hearing vacuums, trucks, and rattling garbage cans, meeting people who are clapping, laughing, with hats, tools, bikes and skate boards. AND puppy needs many opportunities to meet and greet dogs of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Just sharing a home with another dog is not as much doggie socializing as puppy needs. If good canine social skills are not learned and maintained during these early months, it will be very difficult to ever master them. Puppy play dates, trips to the pet store, puppy socialization classes and later, obedience classes are particularly important. If all this doggie time and involvement seems like a good idea, you are up for a puppy! As always, a tired dog is a good dog.

Joan has been vet checked, wormed and had one routine vaccination. She will need two more routine vaccinations plus rabies at the owner’s expense. The $375 adoption fee (check or cash) includes the cost of pup’s required spay/neuter at 6 months of age provided it is done by one of the PUP vets. We do place puppies outside the metro area but a plan for the required spay/neuter must be in place. We do not ship.

If you are at least 21 years old and everyone in your household is on board with adopting a puppy, CALL 651-645-4370 between 7:00 am and 9:30 pm and we will return your call within 24 hours. If you elect to contact us via e-mail it may take several weeks for us to get back to you. Renters must provide proof that you are allowed to have a puppy. Please be prepared to provide a vet reference prior to adoption.
