Rescue Story
Yomi was found with 1,600 other dogs, being kept by an animal hoarder in South Korea. Our partner, Beagle Rescue Network, saved her along with all the other dogs (and had the animal hoarder shutdown).
About Yomi
Yomi is very sweet and very cautious, but we know there’s a happy, playful dog inside her because we’ve seen it shine through the rare cracks in her otherwise guarded personality. Her caution is most likely because, until now, she’s lived most of her life outside with other dogs. So she’s pretty good with other dogs who are calm and respectful, but she’s quite cautious with humans. For example, it took her about 6 weeks to warm up to her foster family, whereas other dogs would take only a few days.
It’s slow-going, but Yomi is coming out of her shell day by day. Her forever home will need to be a family that is extremely patient and willing to work with Yomi for months (perhaps a year or more) for her to learn, trust, and be fully happy and relaxed around humans. Currently, her potty training is still a work in progress, but she’s great with everything else: doesn’t chew things, doesn’t jump on things, and so on.
Like many rescue dogs, Yomi is scared of loud noises (fireworks, people playing tennis, etc.). If she is scared of something, she will sit on the ground and refuse to move (she tends to freeze rather than run). The recent Canada Day fireworks have made her scared of the backyard at night, but she’s working to overcome that fear (before, she was fine at night).
Yomi has a lot of great qualities. She’s incredibly sweet and gentle. She loves to go on walks (long walks, too). She’s super quiet (although we have heard her cry happily a couple times when her foster mom came home). We’ve seen her kind of play gently a few times. We’ve seen her run happily a few times. She likes snuffle mats (nose work). She’s very respectful to other dogs. She likes to relax on the couch (if you scoop her up; she won’t jump up on her own). She doesn’t mind being picked up or held. And she loves to eat–huge appetite!
With patience and the right forever home and the right training, we think that Yomi will forget her past life and become a happy, playful dog. She might always be a little shy or cautious, but there is joy and love in her heart.
Yomi is in Waterloo. Only selected candidates can have a meet-and-greet to respect the foster family’s time and privacy (and Yomi’s shyness).
