Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Katie is an adorable Shih Tzu. She is almost 9 lbs. and is 2-3 years old. She is spayed, microchipped, UTD on shots/preventatives and is ready to find her new family.
Little Katie came to us in pretty bad shape. Upon arrival she was immediately rushed to the groomer for a bath and shave. Her hair was matted and unkept, but under that mess was a raging skin infection. Poor girl was soooooo itchy. Next stop, veterinarians’ office. She was put on a strong course of meds and we changed her diet - that it is helping a lot, but there is no way to tell yet if this will be a lifetime of skin management (meds, diet, regular baths, grooming) for her or this is just a onetime infection.
Shih Tzu’s are known to have chronic skin, dental, and eye issues that can be frustrating and costly, so this is something to consider if you are interested in her. She is still on meds now and we are hoping things continue to improve and clear up. Her hair is slowly growing back.
Katie is a very small, friendly, sweet princess. She gets along well with other dogs and doesn’t seem to mind kitties. She hangs out quietly with a 10-year-old, blind Shih Tzu and then goes and plays with a young puppy. She still has energy, but she can also be calm. She does fairly well on a leash and is pretty good in the car. However, she does seem shy and anxious with any kind of change. Even walking to the mailbox right now does stress her. She will need a simple routine. Her manners need a little work – she loves to beg for food, and she whines for attention. Her potty training is going well, but she is not 100% yet. She’ll learn.
She will sleep through the night (preferably with a human on the bed). She does not like the crate at all, and does not like being alone. She will cry and scratches at doors and windows when alone, so she needs someone who is home most of the time. She is better when there are other dogs home with her but she really prefers to be with/near people. She is a shadow. A home with people home a lot and/or other dogs will help with her separation issues.
