Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Max came to the shelter after his owners left him in the back yard of their rental home, and moved away. They opened the gate, thinking he would just run away, but no... Max stayed in the back yard, waiting for them to return and he was taking care of that yard! The landlord arrived, and called animal control to remove Max, and he wasn't a very happy dog for a while.. Someone had taken him away from his job!
He stayed at the county shelter for weeks, and while he did, he learned to love and trust the volunteers. He began to show off the tricks he had been taught, and we all just fell in love with him! Max can sit, pray, lie down, roll over, shake both paws and finishes with his "twirl"! He loves treats, and we found that he would do all of the tricks in a row if you weren't giving them fast enough...
Max is a very strong dog and sensitive... He looks you in the eye and wants to please you. If you are his human, he will go to the ends of the earth for you. He definitely will protect you from any threat, and any owner should know that he needs a job and most likely you will be his job.
He responds to kindness and a gentle touch... not shouting commands or man handling. He needs to be in a family, as an only dog, because he always has been. He prefers women over men, as his previous owners (the horrible people) were two women, whom he loved. We have found he is reactive to men in cowboy hats. (and there are a lot of them down here in Texas). He has never been around small children, so can't recommend it...
So... Max is a dog who will love and protect his owner, but needs a very experienced adopter who can maintain him within a fenced area. He is a very special dog and if you are a special adopter who wants a lifelong companion, Max is your guy!
