ABOUT:
Pickles is a special little girl who will need a very special adopter who is willing to manage her heart condition. (See more below)

Pickles is such a sweet little girl. She can be a little apprehensive of new people at first but after a few moments she wants everyone to give her love and attention. Pickles has a special affinity for men! Pickles will bring love and joy to any home that adopts her.

Pickles is housetrained, does well in the car, and walks well on leash. She is generally very quiet and only barks at normal dog things like the doorbell or an unusual/loud noise. She is crated in her foster home and does very well. She actually spent most of her time in her crate the first few days, so she does appreciate having a safe place to call her own.

Her foster home said she is such a good, easy dog. Her foster said it is hard to remember she is sick because she is so happy and full of life.

Pickles does well with other dogs, but can only be placed with calm dogs who will not encourage excessive activity from her. We also think Pickles will be best served in a calm, adult-only home due to her medical needs and restrictions. She will likely be fine with gentle child visitors.

Pickles has a congenital disease called Reverse Shunting Patent Ductus Arteriosus.
Her life expectancy was listed as 1-24 months on her cardiology report, but because she responded to the medication well, we are hopeful she will have a longer life span. Her foster home said the medication made a noticeable difference. Pickles is already quite the survivor at 6 years old! Her cardiology report states that ⅔ of dogs with her condition do not survive past 1 year.

Pickles will need an adopter committed to her medication regimen as she receives 5 different medications. The cost of her medications is approximately $80-90/month. Her food also needs to be specific due to elevated kidney levels. She is currently doing well on Purina Pro Plan dry. Pickles is also to remain on an exercise restricted life, she should avoid heavy activity, a lot of excitement, and temperature extremes.

Her adopter will need to expect to keep up with regular veterinary visits including potential future cardiology appointments if/as needed.

Pickles is not spayed, and cannot be safely sedated for the surgery. Her heat cycles will need to be carefully managed.

If you think you have the room in your heart and home for this special-needs girl, more information on our adoption process and our adoption application can be found at www.luluslockerrescue.org.

More about this rescue

Lulu’s Locker Rescue is a nonprofit, volunteer-run companion animal rescue working to bring to light the plight of black cats and dogs in shelters as well as the misconceptions surrounding FIV cats. We aim to lower the euthanasia rate of these animals by educating the public and providing foster care as we seek out permanent homes. We are committed to the protection of the misjudged and wrongly stereotyped through compassion and respect, which we believe both animals and human beings deserve.

We are based out of Frankfort, IL, and rescue cats and dogs in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
