My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rufus is a 15-year-old dachshund who is bonded with Daisy. Both pups take time to warmup, but once they do, they are sweet and loving. They were rescued from a shelter and are in search of a quiet home with experienced owners, and no young children.

Environment

Both are crate trained and house trained too. Rufus especially loves to run, and sniff unfettered, as a result, this pair will need a fenced yard to get their exercise. They don’t necessarily need someone who works from home since they are fine in their crates. They both enjoy snuggling in their beds and relaxing in an open crate.

Pets & People

Rufus prefers the company of Daisy, and the pair would do fine as the only dogs in the home. However, they are accepting of other dogs as long as introductions are done slowly and approached with love and patience. Separation at mealtimes is a good idea as he is a big eater and isn’t shy about taking other dogs’ food. With new people it’s a similar story—he needs time and patience. However, once he becomes familiar, he will steal your heart with his beautiful face and loyal nature.

Location

Rufus and sister Daisy are available for adoption from Wheaton, MD. They are a little whiny in the car but will quiet down eventually.

Please email doxelovr@gmail.com with any questions or complete an adoption application at the link above. The adoption fee for Rufus is $200.00

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

6 Step Adoption Process

1) Application - (While we encourage you to let us know on your application if one of our dogs has captured your interest, we use this simply as a guide for matching and your listing of specific dog in no way implies claim to this particular dog)

NOTE: Adoption Applications expire 6 months from the date of receipt. If you have already submitted an Adoption Application and it has been longer than 6 months, you will need to fill out a new Adoption Application.

2) Reference Checks - All references will be checked prior to home visit. We will contact your current vet, if you have one, for a reference.

3) Application Review - Processor reviews the application, calls the vet if you have one, verifies vaccinations and spay/neuter. We email personal references (if email is provided) or call them if necessary. Email is best since as references can respond when they are available.

4) Home Visit - A volunteer will come to your home to visit with you and discuss care of dachshunds. Also, the volunteer will look for any potential problems and check to be sure that your fencing is secure. Your home visit does not mean you have been approved.

5) Approval - After the above steps have been completed all your information will be reviewed and a decision will be made about adoption. If at this point you are approved to adopt, LPDR will help guide you to the appropriate dog for your family.

6) Contract - For the protection of the dogs we place, everyone that adopts a dachshund from LPDR will be required to sign an adoption contract.

Go meet their pets

Are you looking for an opportunity to foster a dachshund? Fostering is our transitional step from a shelter/surrender to a forever home. During this time it’s important that we give each dachshund a safe environment where it can learn to trust again, to heal and to learn how to become a loving family member. Many of the dachshunds that we pull from shelters or receive from an owner surrender just need a temporary home until their new forever home can be found. Please go to our website (www.LittlePawsDR.org) to learn more.

More about this rescue

Little Paws Dachshund Rescue is a foster-based, non-profit animal rescue that specializes in finding permanent homes for dachshunds, dachshund mixes, and other small dogs. It is LPDR’s goal to identify abandoned, mistreated, or homeless dogs and oversee their treatment and well being while working to find loving owners for those in our care. We strive to make the lives of all dogs better through action, advocacy, awareness and education.
