Fifi was still just a pup when the Animal Control Officer showed up. She hadn’t seen her humans in days. She waited and watched over her brother, a cat named Sal. Fifi still thought her people were coming back.
Not realizing they were there to save her, she tried desperately to evade the uniformed intruder. She would not be bribed or tricked with sweet words and treats. She would not submit to go meekly along with her captor. Fifi would not abandon her brother; would not be taken from her home; would not give up on her family. Hunger and loneliness didn’t matter. She was not giving up.
Obviously Animal Control wasn’t going to give up either. They were able to corral and get her safely to the Heritage Humane Society. Shaken. Scared. But also resilient. With heaps of patience, love, and time, the team at HHS slowly won her over. Fifi learned how to really trust a handful of us. We became her new humans. One at a time, she’s invited her chosen humans into the Fifi inner circle. Anointing us with hugs, kisses, and ear nibbles. Pro-level snuggles. Mandatory if you’re one of her humans. Off-limits if you’re not.
Not everyone makes it into the inner circle. But once you’re in, you’re all the way in. It always takes time, and sometimes it just isn’t going to happen. She loves playing with toys, going for hikes, and couch potato time all the same.
She can be mercurial. She can be aloof. She will be the most loyal companion you’ll ever have. If, of course, you’re one of the chosen.
