Harlem is a beautiful 10-month old female Terrier mix who was surrendered by her owner on May 24, 2023 because she was no longer in a position to take care of Harlem.
Harlem has a black short smooth coat with subtle gray shading, a large white bib on her chest, white paws, a long tail, and an adorable face with dark brown eyes, a black/charcoal gray nose, and short floppy ears.
When her owner surrendered Harlem, we were advised that Harlem would prefer to be an 'only child' since didn't do well with children, cats, and other dogs. (Note: After being in our shelter for many months, Harlem has been actually been doing ok with other dogs.)
Harlem has been kept indoors and is housebroken.
This young lady was naturally very scared/nervous when she entered our shelter in May 2023 and found herself in an unfamiliar place with people that she did not know. Our kind kennel techs have made sure that Harlem realized that she was in a safe place and that they would give her unconditional love while she waits her new home.
Harlem weighs 54.6 lbs. She doesn't appear to have been accustomed to walking on a leash, so our HSOV kennel techs began working with her on leash training while these photos were taken later in the afternoon on May 24, 2023.
Harlem was spayed on June 13, 2023 and was also given rabies vaccine.
Since her owner later changed her mind about surrendering Harlem, she was held as 'safe-keeping' in hopes that Harlem could return home.
Update 8/6/2024: Harlem is now available for adoption and is looking for a loving home. HSOV kennel techs and volunteers have provided some of their experiences with Harlem that we will share in order to help her find the perfect home:
April 2024: Harlem's "play style" is varied (rough & rowdy; push & pull; gentle & dainty). She is a "mirror dog" (tends to mimic what other dogs around her are doing), and she is a good "helper dog".
August 2024: Harlem has attended off-site walks. She rides well in a car and is friendly with other dogs on the walk. She is a little unsure of strangers who approach her on the walking trail but is easily redirected. Harlem is very loving and comfortable with her handler. She loves the 'water stream/creek' and jumps right in to walk in the water.
Harlem would love to be back in a home of her very own with a special someone who would have the patience to adjust on her own schedule and to reach her full potential.

The HSOV Adoption application is available at our shelter during normal hours of operation and may also be completed online via our website.

Shelter management reviews applications for approval. If approved, potential adopters will be notified.

All HSOV dogs and cats must be spayed/neutered before being adopted and going to their new home.

Our adoption process includes an adoption application which must be completed and approved by our shelter management. We verify veterinarian references and also approval from landlords if the pet will be housed in rental property. Home visits may also be required prior to adoption. All dogs/cats must be spayed/neutered before being adopted.
Adoption fee for dogs is $150.00 which includes vaccinations, wormer, flea treatment, dog tag, microchip, and spay/neuter.
Adoption fee for cats is $40 and includes vaccinations, wormer, flea treatment, and spay/neuter. Most adult cats (and kittens over 3-months of age) have already been spayed/neutered.
Adoption fees for other species varies.
