Learn More About Toshi Below:

From his Owner: Toshi likes his toys, and he likes to bring them to us for us to try to get them away from him. He has a ball, and he likes to play fetch in the house. When he brings the ball back, he wants us to try and get it away from him and/or chase him to get it away from him, and then throw it again. When I have taken him to the dog park he does not chase or retrieve his ball, but he will chase another dog who is chasing a ball.

Tosh is not hyper. He mostly lays around and sleeps, but I believe he would be more active if he had an owner who was more active. He loves to go on his walks and sometimes I run with him, and he loves to run. The problem is, I can’t keep up the running for long because he’s much faster than I am. I know that, if given the opportunity, Toshi would love to hike!

Toshi has a fantastic temperament. He is not at all dog aggressive, and when he goes to boarding, he mixes very well with other dogs. However, Toshi has not lived in a home with other dogs, so he may do best in an environment where he is the only dog. Malamutes are known for resource guarding/ food aggression, and since Toshi has never lived with another dog, he hasn’t had the opportunity to work that out. Also, Toshi does not do well with cats.

In public situations Toshi is good with both males and females. If Toshi should in the long run be paired with another dog he might prefer females, just because he has been raised in a house with all female humans. But if paired well, he would be good with either males or females. He should be taken to meet any potential companion and allowed to choose. It is for him, after all, that a mate might be adopted.

Toshi does not respond well to negative reinforcement. But he responds very well to positive reinforcement, and he will do anything for a treat. "TREAT" is a word that he clearly recognizes and understands! Use treats to your advantage for both training and daily behavior modification.

Regarding children: Toshi has never lived in a house with children, but he regularly sees and interacts with children while out on his walk. They always want to pet him, and I let them, but I always make sure that Toshi is sitting down first. If he is not sitting calmly, before the children approach, he will try to jump up on them and because of his weight he could easily knock a small child down. He will sometimes still try to jump up on them, even after he has been sitting for a while. I have not been able to completely control his jumping behavior. If adopted into a home with children, it would be best for the children to be 12 years old or older. Toshi doesn’t want to hurt a child. He just wants to love them but as a larger dog he can easily knock small children down and inadvertently hurt them.

Toshi’s Training: Toshi is completely crate trained and house broken. He will do everything he can to let me know that he has to go relieve himself when it is outside of his normal walking times. He becomes restless and pesters me until I pick up on what's going on and he won't stop pestering me until I take him outside. I walk him in the morning before I go to work and in the evening when I get home from work. So typically, he poops twice a day. And most of the time I also take him out once more before I go to bed at night, just so he can pee one last time.

Toshi knows the basic commands: sit, down, stay, and leave it. I also use the "Easy" command when I am walking him and he sees another dog, because he can be very dog interested and try to pull me so he can get to the other dog. I can control his pulling behavior with the “Easy” command and keeping a tight rein on the leash.

Application/Adoption Requirements: Toshi will be adopted to an inside only forever home. Fence preferred. References, vet checks, and home check required. Adoption donation of $250 will be used to help other dogs in need.
