Meet Ray! This charming 6-year-old boxer mix is still on the lookout for his forever home. Ray arrived at the shelter in January 2019 as a stray, found on the side of the highway in Gravois Mills. While we don't know much about his early life, what we do know is that Ray is a spirited and energetic boy who thrives on companionship and playtime.
Ray is a live wire with a heart full of joy! He loves to engage with his humans and is always ready for a game of fetch, especially with his beloved tennis balls. He's mastered the art of chasing but sometimes needs a little encouragement to drop the ball-just throw another one, and he'll happily swap! His silly antics are sure to bring laughter to anyone in the room.
Having graduated from Missouri Puppies for Parole at the Jefferson City Correctional Center, Ray showcased his eagerness to learn and grow. He's got his basic commands down and is well on his way to being a fantastic companion. However, Ray is still learning to trust people fully. He has formed strong bonds with his handler and close friends but can be a bit wary of fast movements or sudden gestures. His crossed eyes may cause some blind spots, so he's looking for a patient and understanding home that can respect his need for space as he adjusts.
Ray enjoys playgroups with other dogs and does well with his furry friends, but he can be protective of his toys and crate. Because of this, he would thrive best as an only dog or in a home with experienced dog owners who can help manage his protective tendencies.
This special guy flourishes with structure and consistent training, and he responds well to positive reinforcement. After spending so much time without a permanent home, Ray is ready to find his place in the world. If you're looking for a loyal and loving companion who will brighten your days, Ray may just be the perfect match for you! Could you be the one he's been waiting for? Ray's adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous donor.

More about this shelter
Dogwood Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter.
Since its infancy, compassionate, like-minded volunteers have been the driving force behind Dogwood Animal Shelter. Through auctions and sales, a handful of dedicated people raised enough money to build its first, albeit small facility and was established as a 501(c) 3 in 1976. It was filled beyond capacity almost immediately.
The shelter is funded entirely from donations and proceeds from their Dogwood Animal Shelter Thrift Store.
After years of saving, planning and busting at the seams with fur-babies, in 2005 it was time to build a new facility with their own in-house clinic! Under the direction of Dr. John Reinhold and coupled with a very dedicated and gifted team of Veterinarians and staff, Dogwood Animal Shelter continues to offer low cost spays and neuters to the public as well as services to their shelter buddies; services to approximately 2,000 dogs and cats yearly!
Dogwood Animal Shelter began their journey of being a successful no-kill shelter in 1997, and since then has saved over 40,000 lives!
