My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Kellan, the adorable, goofy 2-year-old mixed breed dog; he is deaf, but he doesn`t seem to let that slow him down. He`s a real charmer with a heart-melting smile. Kellan is incredibly food motivated and enjoys playing with toys. Kellan is potty trained, crate trained, and is learning more every day. His playful and quirky nature shines through as he crawls around on his belly, showing off his funny personality. One of Kellan`s favorite things to do is play catch (with himself!). Kellan is dog social, loves to play, and would love to meet any potential fur siblings before going home.

Kellan is deaf so needs a family that will be willing to think outside the box as far as training goes. Kellan needs structure and routine because being a teenager is hard. His foster family is working with him on hand signals and he is learning them quickly. He knows to watch his person for guidance and has already learned to sit and stay. (read how well it`s going in the foster notes below)

He loves the other dogs in his foster home and enjoys playing with them. He would do better in a home without cats. Kellan loves his people and is a joy to be around. He is a smart boy who is ready to learn and give all the love you want from a furry friend.

This is a dog you just have to meet!! His foster family has SO MANY good things to say about him. We`ve included some of that here, but to get all the details, email foster@kcpetproject.org to learn more or meet this special guy!
His foster mom says:
If I were to ask Kellan what he would want in a future home, his Christmas list would include... doggy friends who love the outdoors and want to play all the time... Everything is a game and Kellan has lots of sparkling energy for fun! He loves roaming through the woods, sniffing everything and chasing birds and squirrels if they`re nearby. Kellan`s best life would include an active human and canine friends with lots of space to roam. In the evenings he dreams of sleeping cuddled up with his human companion and is a very polite bed mate.

Kellan is deaf, but he does not consider that a disability, instead his human and canine companions become his leader and he is content to follow along. Kellan does not know a stranger, he loves everybody, but he can get a bit mouthy in play so he probably would do better around older kids. Compensating for his hearing, Kellan has a well developed sense of sight...[he] likes to watch dogs on TV. He often gets

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Thanks so much for considering adoption! At KC Pet Project we have no blanket rules. Our goal is to find the pet that is right for YOUR family. The adoption process takes about an hour and does not require you filling out any paperwork ahead of time – you’ll do that once you’ve met someone and decide it’s a good fit. If you have another dog at home, we would like to have a supervised introduction with your pet(s) and our pet. Details about the introduction process can be found below.

You can view all of our adoptable dogs online at – we update their availability and location in real time. If you see them, they are still available for adoption. When you click on their photo it will show their location. There is no appointment needed to visit our pets.

You can visit any of our three locations seven days a week and find a pet that you’re interested in, or meet someone in foster at a mutually agreed upon location. We will have you fill some things out and then go through an adoption interview with a staff member. If all goes well, we’ll send you home with them that day. They’ll have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, have age appropriate vaccines, have been heartworm tested, and have received intestinal dewormer.

Small dogs, puppies, and specialty breeds go quickly here at KC Pet Project. If your schedule allows, you are encouraged to visit our dogs here at the shelter, as we often times have these dogs but they are on stray hold. If you see a pet you are interested in but they are not currently available, you have the option of putting down an Early Bird hold. The EB hold is $50 and $25 of it is a non-refundable donation to us that gives you first right of adoption if the dog is not reclaimed, and the other $25 is deducted from the dog’s adoption fee.

All of our adopters are expected to have a proper leash and collar for their dogs or a carrier to take home cats, which can be found in the retail section of any of our locations. If you live in Kansas City, MO, you should also expect to purchase a city license tag for $12 – this is something you’ll renew each year upon vaccinating your pet.

If you need to introduce your pet(s) to our pet: We recommend visiting an animal first to make sure that it is a good candidate for your home, and so that you have free hands. If you decide you would like to proceed with a meet and greet, please bring your dog to the location where your adoption candidate lives and staff will assist you. If visiting the main shelter, please do not bring your dog into the kennel area. Instead, have someone you trust hold onto your dog and notify a staff member that you are here for the introduction, or you can leave them in your car if it is weather appropriate. KCPP staff will let your dog and our dog drag a leash and greet each other naturally, without you present so that the introduction can be as objective as possible. Please plan on separating your newly adopted dog from your current dog on your drive home (in a kennel, for example), unless you have assistance.

Adoption Fees:
Adult mixed breed dogs: $75-150
Small breed dogs and puppies: $150-300
Cats: $25-$75
