My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Meet Danny! He is an 11 year old Shih Tzu and weighs 17 pounds. His previous owner went into a nursing home and could not take Danny with her. He is a calm, mellow guy who loves nothing more than being near people. He is house broken, sleeps well through the night and enjoys his meals.
Danny came into the rescue feeling pretty miserable, physically. He had suffered from severe allergies that had not been sufficiently treated, resulting in issues that took a while to diagnose and treat. But his allergies are now being treated with a prescription diet and daily medications, which he will need for the rest of his life. Failure to adhere to the diet and medications will result in frequent ear infections and eye problems. His allergies are not difficult to treat, but his new family must be committed and financially able to provide for his treatment. Danny has been a trooper during all of his diagnostic tests, and you would never guess that he has any health issues or is uncomfortable, because his endearing personality shines through. He is always there, ready to snuggle next to you.
If you like to take leisurely walks, Danny is your guy! He was not able to maneuver stairs or jump onto furniture when he first came into rescue. But with the help of his foster parents, he is making progress going up the stairs. He can go for short walks and is slowly expanding his walking distance. He loves to stop and smell everything along the way, and really does enjoy the walks, even though he just ambles along. He is still not able to jump up onto or down from furniture (and he may never be able to do this), so his new family must be able to physically lift him and place him on/off the furniture or bed.
Here is what the foster mom will be looking for in his adoptive family:
1. Financially able and willing to provide the medical care and expenses needed for Danny’s ongoing care. This includes prescription food (Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein) and daily allergy medications (Apoquel) and possible eye medications.
2. Be able to lift and carry Danny, especially if there are stairs in their home.
3. Someone should be home most of the day.
4. Be able and have the desire to continue to work with Danny on expanding his daily walks.
5. Danny would be fine with another small dog in the house, or as the only dog.
6. Families with children over age 8 may be considered as long as they understand that Danny is an older dog and needs to rest most of the day. He is not a playful dog and should not be considered as a playmate for children, and will not do well in an active household.
7. Must live within 75 miles of Burnsville, MN and agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion in September.
Danny is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. He has appointments with an ophthalmologist to evaluate any eye issues and a follow-up with the dermatologist for his allergies. Our rescue will pay for both of these visits, and his adopters must keep the appointments. But future veterinary care after these appointments will be the responsibility of the adopter. Danny’s adoption fee is $170.00 plus $12.79 sales tax for a total of $182.79.
To meet Danny, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.
