Rocket was born in October 2015. January 2016 we purchased him from the Yuppie Puppy pet store which specialized in getting dogs from “good breeders” not puppy mills. We had a previous dog for 17 years and the house just seemed empty without a dog. The whole family was in alignment to get a new dog and understood the commitment to training a puppy.
Rocket’s early years were spent at home and our children were in 3rd and 7th grade when he arrived. He enjoyed playdates in the yard with the kids and their friends. Playing ball, hide-and-seek and building forts. Rocket would just runaround with the kids and always wanted to be involved. My husband and I work traditional 9-5 jobs and the kids went to school.
Some days Rocket would go to “puppy daycare” which he thoroughly enjoyed. In true Jack Russell fashion he would try to rule the place. Walking on the perimeter top of the fence as if he was on patrol. We used to joke with the proprietors and say he thought he was the mayor.
When Rocket was about 4 we noticed he developed some environmental allergies. Pink belly and chewing at his feet. We brought him to the Vet and he needed an allergy shot. We also like to have rockets nails trimmed. Otherwise they split and he hurts his toes while running around and digging. He gets this allergy shot seasonally in the fall and spring, essentially 2x a year.
Rocket has his own room (the dining room which is gated) with a crate and has NEVER slept in a bed with us or our kids. Occasionally there is a nap on the couch, but for the most part everyone has their own bed and he sleeps solidly through the night 7-8 hours. Sometimes Rocket wakes up grumpy and it takes him a few minutes to adjust. Just give him space and a moment to wake up and he is fine.
