Meet Riley! This puppy mill survivor has had quite an adventure since he was rescued at eight weeks old. Riley is a sheltie and was born without a tail and had two holes where he would pass urine. When our volunteer went to pick him up at the puppy mill, he and his very under socialized siblings were hiding in the corner of a cardboard box. Since the other puppies looked normal, they were put up for sale and given to dealers to resell at pet stores or online. The puppy mill operator refused to give up any of the other puppies or Riley’s mother. She had produced 12 litters of puppies in six years. He operates legally in Pennsylvania.
Diagnostics showed that Riley was not just born without a tail, but he was also born with only one kidney. This is a genetic issue. Thanks to the very best care from Dr. Niles and nurse Tiara at Metropolitan Veterinary Associates, Riley had total urogenital reconstruction surgery, was treated for multiple urinary tract infections, has healed so well and since he is now UTI free for a few months is finally up for adoption!
Riley is a typical sheltie. He likes to herd dogs and people, loves to play and is very smart. He can be a bit grabby and skittish due to his puppy mill background so an adult only home with a very secure fenced yard and another playful dog is best. Riley loves other dogs more than anything.
Riley needs a very special and patient forever home. He has so much love to give and every day he blossoms into a more wonderful puppy.
Riley is EXACTLY why puppy mill breeding for pet store sales is a problem and why we need Victoria’s Law here in Pennsylvania
Riley is sweet, loving, and VERY playful! He will require basic obedience training. He is still just a puppy and is still working on his crate training and house breaking.*
*All dogs will go through a transition period after finding a new home and may need a “refresher course” in house-breaking.
